Explorer SE is lame...........

Ivan

New member
.....just a quick repackage/repaint and minor tweak job. Poor quality " fall apart plastic" still there! Poor balance and weight distrubution still there ( have the designers ever used one for a few hours)? Call this the Armbuster SE....why still no hipmount capability? This is not a "new" detector there is absolutlely nothing here to make me want to go from an Explorer2 to an SE. Really....what was the point of this detector????

Although you've made some "interesting" comments, it's a bit odd why you would why ask what the point of this detector is?

It's really more appealing and there are adjustments that I feel have greatly improved the best metal detector. There are a few other metal detectors around that can find just as good and as capable with SOME functions that are better and could be just as productive when in the hands of one who knows how to use them correctly to there optimum abilities.

Maybe ask why Minelab even bothered to make these improved features that some us are just NOT going appreciate.(you know they could have not put these improvements in the form of an Explorer SE at all)

There are improvements to the Explorer SE and I can FULLY appreciate them. I wouldn't say NO to what they have done to it.

It's also good know Minelab haven

Gee, i'm surprised you own EX2. If i thought that about my Explorer's i'd sell them. I think the SE is a nice improvement, actually i thought the upgrade between XS and EX2 was very minor. That's why i upgraded from a XS to an SE. My advise is don't upgrade, and maybe get a White's or something that's not made of fall apart plastic. I'm sure the other people that enjoy this hobby in your area would appreciate that.

Minelab made some improvements on this detector and they were good ones. As far as being lame I don't think so. They didn't up the price and made it a better performing detector. Now Whites going from an xlt spectrum to an xlt e series is lame. And Fisher adding another icon to the 7a pro and calling it a Cz 70 is lame. I could keep going but why bother. I guess we all have our opinions.

well I think the R&D dept. just doesn't listen very well. The weight is the real issue and flimsy locking cams. One would think the locking cams would be easy to improve. The weight is not so easy to improve without a total redesign or making a hip-mount version.

I think that the market on these things just dictates a new machine every so many years. That's why you can stick a beanie copter hat on a VW bug roof and call it a plane! *LOL*

I just packed up my Explorer XS for repair. Trouble with the top fourth of the screen being blanked out. While I packed it up I thought about how dependable my Explorer II has been. Both machines have been great for me but the XS had to go back for repair quite a few times. The Explorer II has worked flawlessly. My point is that Minelab must have done quite a few upgrades to the II that we really don't see except that it is more dependable. I am sure that the SE upgrade is the same. Personally quicker response time and less falsing on iron sound like a major improvement. I will most likely sell my XS once it gets back from repair and get the SE.

I agree that a weight reduction would be a wonderful thing. Until that happens, I will still be happy swinging the best detector on the market, JMHO.

The machine Minelab really needs to make is a weight reduced, no-display, underwater version of the Explorer. All it would need, for me, is a pinpoint button, iron mask, volume and sensitivity adjustments. Interchangable coils would be nice too. Are you listening Minelab?

Its all about sales and even though I don't own an SE internal improvements have been made...Have to agree first runs of the XS had poor plastic but after that they held up well. As far as weight retooling cost money and the price of the unit would go up. Explorers have good resale value and can see why some have updated to the SE and sold their XS or 11 model..

see my post just a few posts above yours! :)

Hi Larry.
I'm not trying to stir the pot here but there is nothing lame about the cz70. It is the stablemate to my ex2 and it is a deep seeker. Depending on the conditions I may pick one over the other on any given day. Not only did Fisher add another icon...they added the fourth tone with it. The most important thing however (my opinion) is that they made it completely hip mountable...which is something ex2 users including myself have been wanting Minelab to do for years. If you have ever tried a cz70 I don't think you would consider it lame....especially when you can hunt for the entire day and not have your shoulder fall off and still find 8"+ deep coins. Actually all the detectors you mentioned are excellent detectors. Haven't tried the se yet...but I hope I get the chance. We are all entitled to our opinions though which is what makes the forum great. I love the ex2 so I'm sure the SE is a winner as well.
Happy Hunting

It could be the cam lock pad as the plastic plate inside wears.

Just purchase a replacement from your friendly dealer.

Tap out the brass pin remove the lever and fit the new pad its that easy.

There is a little trick which will stop it getting stressed and wearing.

This involves 3 plastic ties one around the camlock lever one higher up around the handle and the third on joins the two as one on the underside, tension them up and clip the ends.

Only God will move the camlock after this mod which looks neat and is on the underside out of sight.

How i fixed my loose bottom stem. A small metal plate fell out of the bottom shaft!

I started to have problems recently with my bottom stem been loose as the cam lever would not close properly. There are 2 reasons why this can happen, 1 is the red cam pad that presses on to the lower stem is worn and needs replacing or as in my case the tiny metal plate that presses onto the pad has become detached , i re glued the plate to the red plastic pad assembly and re assembled it and now the lower shaft is tight again. To get to the pad you will need to knock out the brass pin on the lower cam lever assembly with a small jewellers screwdriver and a small hammer the pin comes out real easy no problem, a few taps and its out, once this is out you can lift off the lever and remove the red plastic shaft clamp which just slides out very easy ,close examination revealed that the clamp was in need of cleaning as it was coated in thick grime, after thoroughly cleaning the red clamp i noticed the small metal plate which looks like it should be attached to the red clamp was in need of fixing to the clamp permanently so i glued the small metal plate with araldite to the red plastic clamp and re assembled it - all is now well i am pleased to say and the loose bottom shaft is fixed - this problem is something to look out for because its possible the small plate could fall out and get lost, i was lucky the small metal plate had not fallen out and got lost. The design of the lower shaft cam clamp assembly needs improving for sure in my opinion its way too flimsy and is not going to take much use before it fails. Dirt on the red pad could be the cause of a loose fitting shaft too. I think the bottom plastic clamp assembly should be replaced with an all new hard wearing metal replacement.
