Some have said they set the Threshold to barely audible. I've also read that you can miss hits through the threshold if it's not loud enough. Should I be lowering the threshold or the volume of the machine? Is lowering the threshold just lowering the threshold volume or does it affect the machine differently? Also, can someone explain the Iron Mask a little bit? I'm confused on how it works compared to the Smartfind screen, or do you use them together?

Iron mask is just a way of discriminating out iron. If set at 22, all signals with FE reading higher than 22 will be ignored. On the smartfind screen you'll see that this area is blacked out, indicating that you won't hear targets in this area. Smartfind deosn't affect the iron mask, it just displays areas that are discriminated out as black areas, and shows the target by the position of the cursor. (if the target is not in the black area)

I max out my volume and control it through my headphones...threshold tone adjust to what you like...the threshold adjustment on the front of the screen should be just a slight hum, but loud enough to hear it over outside noise (wind,
surf etc.) if you run no threshold you will miss very fant sounds of a deep target...if too loud it will cover up fant sounds... just a hum (a light sound of a bee buzzing)...

If you down load a copy of the manual its shows a picture of how to much or little threshold affects the ability of a weak target to break thru and be hurd thru the headphones. Keep your volume high and lower the volume of the threshold. Consider IM as nothing more than turning your disc knob on other machines. If you want to disc out targets.... in crease it. The Smartscreen is a two demensional scale of disc, rather you are using IM or a Pattern. It also shows graphicly the FE and CON readings of a target. You can hunt in the IM screen.... but its mostly used to make adjustment to your IM disc. Most people hunt in Smartscreen or Digital.... both these screens can be switched to a FULL screen as well.
