Explorer SE vs. the electric dog fence

Chris/MA

New member
Went out to an old house today, after hitting a field for a while. Turned on the machine after changing to a smaller coil, and it went completely nuts. Checked everything, dirt in coil cover, coil connectors, changed the coil back to the 14". No dice. Noise cancel didn't do a damn thing.
Then the owner came out and I asked if there were any buried power lines.
"well, no, but we have an electric fence for the dog" was the reply.
They turned off said dog fence and the interference went away as soon as the switch was flipped.

Just a handy tip for future reference..

Hi Chris,

Yes, we have discussed this issue on Findmall before.
And you are correct: it does cause interference: possibly of the Broadband frequency type and it can't be tuned out.
Plus you have Electrical Mains interference as it powers the fence.

By the way, what happened the dog...last reports had him heading for Taco Bell as he made a break for the border...

Oh, they put the dog inside while I was out there.

This particular dog was probably 125 lbs, so I would imagine it could've eaten quite a few tacos.

I have an electric dog fence at my house. We don't have the dog anymore so it is never on. I was detecting with my SE and every once in a while I'd start digging on a good target and hit that darn line! So I had the bright idea of turning the fence back on. I figured it would just do that crazy sound when I got near the power. No dice, the minute I turned on the power, the SE went nuts. Nothing worked, and I had to power off the fence.

It's a bit scary to think about how much of a EMF must be broadcast from the dog fence to have that affect on the MD. I watch that show Ghost Hunters from time to time and they are always talking about how a high EMF field will cause feelings of dread, being watched, and paranoia. They call it a fear cage! Something dog owners may have to ponder! (our dog had behavioral problems, wonder if that contributed to it?!?!)
