Explorer Sensitivity Issue- anyone else had this happen?

I have the Explorer II, and just purchased the Pro coil..... I was SO EXCITED to try it out last Friday but I ran into a problem. It seemed to work OK for about 10 minutes then all of the sudden the falsing/chirping started increasing. So, I turned down the sensitivity from 21 gradually (it just got worse) ....and an hour and a half later I was hunting at Sens of 5-9, with my detector going BERZERK, it was constantly going off non-stop. I tried powering it off/on, I disconnected my Sunray Probe, I tried every channel, numerous noise cancels....turning down the gain....deep and fast OFF..... the only thing that helped was replacing the Pro coil with my 4.5x7 Excelerator coil, then it was quiet. I was scratching my head and was about ready to quit..... when I remembered how to reset it to factory presets... So, I held down the power button until it came up with factory preset settings and---> I WAS IN HEAVEN! Not a chirp, not a false, pitch quiet with sensitivity at 26! I very rarely can hunt above 23 without problems here in Colorado. This was truly a Godsend for me, as I walked 3 feet and got a sweet sounding pitch and dug up a 1880 indian at 7 inches! Unfortunately I was only able to hunt another hour....as I had wasted my day hunting 2/3 of the yard...now I have to re-search it again... and ran out of time. But in that hour, I found 10 and 1/2 wheats (oldest 1911) and the 1880 indian head. Not sure if anyone else has had this happen to them, but maybe it will help others? Perhaps the switch from the old 1050 coil to the new Pro Coil did something?

Happy Hunting!

Usually what you describe is caused by a bad connection, usually the coil connector. There was a thread about this not too long ago.

Thanks for the "heads up" Chris... I see that this has been an on-going issue.... whether it be the Coil or Probe or Batteries. I will do some further testing and see if I can get it to act up again and narrow down the problem.

Ive got to ask... what kind of battery were you using? Mine goes nuts and sometimes i can turn it off and it clears up.... then starts right back. Noise cancel wont work. Its like it gets super sensitive to EMI. Rebooting does work. What ive noticed is it only does this when im using the slimline pack. Ive also wondered if it where the probe is located. I notice im always grabbing it right at the cable switch area... i guess i was in the army too long i tend to want to pick it up like a gun. None the less its sure ticks ya off.

Dew,

I was using the Minelab Rechargable Battery Pack at full charge showing. Maybe I should have tried using the AA battery pack I use as a spare? I could not connect my sunray probe with the falsing problem. Actually, when I switched it to the probe position, the noise went away. I for sure thought I had a bad coil or possibly interference of some sort, but there was nothing visible in the area. It wasn't until I left and went home that I had the idea to try detecting my own front yard. In my own yard it was dead quiet, so I went back to the old yard I was hunting and sure enough, the same thing happened again (unbearable erratic falsing noises). I still am at a loss to understand this phenomenon. :starwars: good vs evil perhaps? I can only hope that I do not have a problem arising....I will go crazy if I have to send something in for repairs.

Its only on occassion when it happends to me... and yes my probe works when switched with no change. Im sure its EMI too, but... if im using AA normally i can noise cancel it away in auto sensititivity. I can also turn off the detector and that works as well with AA... i did notice when i ran my ring across the coil it wasnt getting much depth. As i detected it adjusted to my auto set at 28.... it got noiser. It just odd that most of the time i can detect under power lines and CAN tune it out. I beleave the worth is underground lines they put out a singal that is difficult to get away from. My slimline shows almost full as well.. i think it has something to do when the slimline drops below that mid.. or 10 volt range. Which according to the manual is about 6 hours of detecting. Add the X-1 usage and your settings and you know its less than that. It just frustrating... somedays you will be able to hunt that very same area... no problem. I guess the stars aline correctly lol.
