Hi Don
I have used most major brands of detectors and I have found more keepers with my Explorer XS than all of the other detectors combined. I know people that have the Explorer II's and I can't tell that much difference between the two. The II has a little faster sofware and maybe improved build quality, but I can't tell that they are any deeper than the XS.
$400.00 for a new condition XS is a good price, What I would suggest is buying the book Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S written by Andy Sabisch. It will help alot in learning the Explorer and you can post questions on the forum. The people here are great for helping you learn the explorer, I learn something new every time I visit this forum.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting. TB

I have had my XS for over 3 years now and spent nearly a grand for the package deal new. It has paid itself off a few times by now. Minelab replaced the XS with the II a little over a year ago. I have seen the II in action and it is nearly identical. My understanding is that the II has more precise digital and a little quicker response to targets. The II users here can verify that if true and add whatever else. Most will say the depth is the same between the two. I'm sure you noticed that most people on this forum have nearly mastered there explorers in their own way. It is only as hard as you want it to be. For the first couple years I used factory preset (smartfind) and was astounded at what I was finding at hunted out sites. My first time out with my new XS I came home with a seated and two barber dimes, 5 LCs, and a bunch of indianheads and that's no BS. No new coins! All the other brands found them. All I did was turn it on and go. This past year I have made a few changes to my settings but nothing complicated. On the other hand, I have heard nothing but good things about the Quattro but man...that $400 will take you far especially if you can actually take it for a test drive, OR, if it comes with a money back quarentee. Whatever you choose you cant go wrong. All three will give you an unfair advantage over all the others. Hope this helps.

If its the first version of the XS will have bad plastics and some other bugs..If Dec comes up on screen might be leery, but if Sep comes up its a steal..

They started using the better plastic March 2001. If it wasn't made before that, problems shouldn't be too likely. I dug only the "sure bets" where the crosshairs stayed in upper right & got to 7" on coins & the one I have air tests 10" on dime with sensitivity on 22. Some people get that deep in the ground but I suspect in most locations that involves digging some iffy signals. Usually, they work best when swept slow or even very slow. George (MN)

I am farly new to the hobbie ( one year with the ex.xs)I was lucky that i bought mine off of a dealer that is a hunter of 30 years or better. He had it all set up for me to use in his program. After hunting for a year with it , i sold enough bullets to purchase a new minelab. Its the only machine that i had ever used, and will probably will ever use. I bought the explorer II and absolutely love it.There is not much difference between the two that i will ever use. but i noticed that the ex.II does have better ID. and a more accurate depth guage.
I have made some nice finds and if i sold everything i found with it , i probably could pay for the machines multiple times. Not braging, but I am verry impressed with the minelab product. I could go on and on about the stories when i hunt with a friend that uses UMMMMM the other brand, but they read my posts also.
P.S. 400. is cheap, look it over good, try it out.It will pay for itself. Hope this helps.

When you first boot it up you will see which software version, and then DEC,or SEPT.
