Explorer XS upper shaft on Quattro?

rob5

New member
Hi,
Can we use the Explorer XS upper shaft and lower shaft with the Quattro?
because I read about the Sun Ray X-1:
"The Explorer XS & S upper shaft is not recommended for use with the new Explorer II/Quattro control housing and may damage the locking system.)"

Or can we use the Quattro upper shaft with the Explorer lower shaft?

Thanks for your reply

The upper shafts are differnt between the XS and the XSII/Quattro, but the lower shafts for them are the same. So for the Quattro you can use the upper shaft from the XS II or the new SE, but not the one for the XS and the lower shaft can be used on the XS, XS II, SE or the Quattro as they are the same.

That doesn't sound too good. I ordered the Explorer II upper shaft only a few days ago to fit into my XS. I was told by The Miners Den, that this would be no problem!(This shop is owned by Minelab.) Sounds like they have done me in yet again!:throw: If I have been done in, it will be for the last time! I've had a gutful of this company. I'm sick of being lied to. Those that go on the X-Terra forum know what has already happened to me because of this company.

Thanks you for your answers, it is a bad idea to use the Explorer XS upper shaft with the Quattro, too risky.
:detecting:

The original Explorer XS upper shaft did not have an angle cut end when the model was originally released.

The end that is inserted into the Explorer's control box was just simply a strait 90 degree end cut.

This did not help with the way this shaft was supposed to stay inside the control box and when there where some issues that related to the way the cam lock support plastic would crack around that bronze pin that help it in, it only made things worse.

In some cases, to help address the problem of the upper shaft slipping out of it's position, I believe Minelab issued an altered upper shaft still with a straight 90 degree end but with dimples stamped into This was done to help with the shaft staying in even AFTER dealing with the issue relating to the weak plastic cam lock support was dealt with.
At the later stages and just before the release of the Exp2,I was told , by a pretty reliable source, that in some cases Minelab would have actually changed , not only the control box, but also the handle/battery pod so as it would take the angel cut upper tube that was being issued to some when the units went back for the control box housing replacement.

BUT

some of the Explorer XS's(maybe all or maybe the later issues)would still have been able to accommodate the angle cut upper shaft.

When I took the control box off and dismantled my original Explorer XS's handle and battery pod I noticed that in it's design, it would have accommodated an angle cut upper shaft like the ones that were issued for the Exp2. It would do so correctly to the point that it would allow the cam lock of the lower stem to face downward.

I am VERY sure than Minelab did not change the battery pod/handle on my detector, when they fixed it with the new control box housing, so it is an indication to me that the Explorer XS could have taken an angle cut shaft in the first place.

I don't think you've been lied to and believe that they, Miners Den are correct in telling you that the upper shaft of a Exp2 will fit.

It worked for me.

IF it doesn't for you, then I believe you're entitled to a FULL refund........................and maybe a free lunch:cheers:

Thanks Dave. sorry for getting a bit hot under the collar. As my X-Terra is in for repair for the third time for the same issues, I'm not in the best frame of mind. I just don't have any faith in them anymore. The rod arrived this afternoon. So hopefully I can figure out how to debond the glue (I bought it glued together) and see if it will fit.
