Extra cable wrapped around shaft..

Nevada Gary

New member
Eric-- or anyone. Why is there so much extra coil-to-box cable wrapped around the shaft? Looks like an electro magnet ;-) Makes me wonder if performance changes since it is carrying current and signal. Luckily shafts aren't steel. And yess- I have extra cable in a spiral up the shaft of my MXT, but not in contact with each other.

Hi Gary,

Many detectors do seem to have excess cable. Sometimes it is because the control box can either be shaft mounted or be hip mounted, which needs more cable.

I have settled on hip mounting and use a cable length which allows the coil and shaft to be put down on the ground while digging, without pulling the cable. Also a persons height will make a difference.

As far as I can tell, having a cable coiled or straight on the shaft, makes no difference. You hear stories to the contrary, but with the coax cable that I use, there in no external field to interact with anything.

Eric.
