F 70 coil 6.5 oval vs 5" round

campnagle

New member
My understanding is the 6.5 oval is a concentric and the 5" round is DD. Which would be better for curb strips and fence lines. From what a read the DD gets better depth but man that 5" seems awful small. Also hunt campgrounds and cant get close to fire pits due to melted bits of metal. Thinking the small coil can work those areas as well. Thanks

I use both on my F 75 and if limited to one of the two, it would be the 5" DD. The 5" always amazes me with its tight target separation and does seemingly have an edge on depth. The 6 1/2" concentric does do a better job of id'ing bottle caps and I like it for hunting in the woods/brush where the bigger coils are often hindered for getting into, around and under brush and shrubs. Campgrounds can be quite trashy, but for curbs and fence lines the 6 1/2 would be great. My 2 cents. HH jim tn

Thanks for the info Jim, Maybe both would be in order. I read somewhere that the gold bug coils fit and the 1200 series but I hate to buy one not knowing. Is there a chart or someone who knows what coils interchange with the F series?. not just fit but work as they should?

David J pops in here on occasion and he would know for sure. I am not aware of any coils interchangeable with the F 70/F75. HH jim tn

I bought the 6" coil first, then a few months later the 5". I haven't put the 6" on since. The 5 seems to be able to get between the trash better and with less falsing or wrap around. I can read the 5 better also.

When going through trashy areas, we're not there to cover ground. The more trash, the slower ya go as to be able to audibly separate out the high blips.

Going too fast, one may miss them. Once over the high tone target, a little wiggle around the target will give you reason or not to dig. If there are two or more targets in the wiggle and one is a high tone only in a few directions, you may just have to dig to be satisfied.

When detecting high trash areas, if I wander out and into med to low trash, I'll go back into the high trash. Makes no sense for me to detect with the small coil in low trash, I'd rather have on the 11"dd for that.

The 11"dd coil is also phenomenal in trash, but again, slow is the ticket.

I have to mention, I only hunt for old coins but the same goes for clad and jewelry, and I use the f-75 which is practically the same as the f-70.
