F-70 First Impressions

I just bought an F-70 on this forum. Took it out today for some shake down runs. The first thing I noticed is that is won't shut up until you are over a good target. When you are over a good target it locks on strong. Sensitivity at about 35 was all I could manage in my residential neighborhood. I came home with about twice as many good targets as I normally do due to better depth and VDI numbers. Even got a silver ring with it. I would never recommend this detector for a beginner. But I have been detecting for about twenty-five years and I think that helps...a lot. This detector will now become my main Park detector with the Cibola relegated to the tot lots. Not cutting the Cibola because it is a good detector but it doesn't match the F-70 in the parks for quantity of finds. It is a funny thing about changing detectors...it's almost like your favorite hunting grounds become brand new again. Since I don't have the old cellar holes and what not to detect too close to me I will now be fine tuning my hunting style to detect jewelry...preferably gold. The next step is to get out some of my gold finds to figure out what VDI numbers the majority of them fall into.

I haven't noticed that being a problem with the F70. Was this a new F70 or was it a used unit you purchased ? One thing you can check is swap out the coil, and see how it responds. A good choice is to acquire the 11" DD from the F75. There again maybe it's the nature of the beast in your environment. :)

In the beginning there were a few questions about the coil. Drop me a note if you can't clear it out. I'll try the same settings on my unit.

The F70 is a nice, often overlooked detector. Very powerfull, deep. I try to keep 3 or 4 in stock at all times. There's some good deals going on with them now.

I think you got hit by EMI the LTD is way more tame you can run it in Calif at a sens of 75-90 and 0 disc with some noice but not enough to ruin a hunt. The F75 was really chattery and my friend had an F70 in Calif and sold it for the LTD. Your sens is very low and the F70-LTD are made to crank the sens up more to help unmask...but if your finds have gotten better maybe try the small coil and you will have to hunt more to cover more ground but may get even more finds that are being masked. What coil are you using? The DD is a very good coil and so is the small DD. You may have a bad coil or just got hit my EMI try a place out of town and see what happens

No F70 LTD but look for something coming from Fisher this year....The F70 is a good machine but the LTD is the best for relic and coin shooting more stabel more programing and the air gap is about five inches...Maybe you can sell the F70 but I would only buy the LTD if I was going to get a new detector and it was only made for about a month and then fisher stopped making them...It is a killer machine I don't even use my F75 anymore with the boost mode on the LTD

Lowboy...since Fisher's 80th anniversary is in 2011, do you think they will call their new one the F80? A good idea would be to take the F75 LTD without the camo and make it an F80. Just a hunch...

Fisher has to have something planned if they want to stay on top....but they do have a new gold machine coming out that is going to be a nice relic hunter..

I bought the machine used but it does not look very used. Do you think the 11" DD coil would cut down on the chatter? The detector has the stock coil which is oval in shape and about 9 1/2" long and about 5 1/4" wide. I can't see myself dropping $1000 or better for an LTD as I am primarily a beach hunter and use a PI for that. But I would probably buy the 11" DD if that would help with the chatter as I do enjoy land hunting.

It didn't help on the F75 but does on the LTD in Calif ground I would not really use a F70 for the beach. I like the CZ3 it is my back up to the LTD and F75 for really bad EMI...

They had been known to have a coil problem on the early F70's. If you could substitute another coil it certainly give you a good idea.

The F70 has been a quiet operating detector. Not being with you at the time, makes it near impossible to diagnose the problem, but taking a good guess, I would say coil.

Mr. Bill

PS: We have quite a few F70's in stock if anyone wants a high performance detector without wrecking the bank.

i have a f70 with the stock coil i love it
but like every fisher ive ever had it chatters pops crackles
but gets the goods
try discriminate 15 / de mode / threshold -3 / sensitivity 50 & ground balance to the spot..
a lot of the noise is small bits of tinfoil & trash
improper ground balance can also make it noisy
give it some time it will get the job done
good hunting

I'm acutally getting used to the chatter. One of my main detectors for a long time was the 1265. It talks like crazy on the beach but I have found more goodies with the 1265 than all other detectors put together. But it is too heavy for me now in my old age. I got the 1265 out yesterday so I could hunt with my son on the beach. Did quite well with it as I guess you never really lose it. I think the EMI is getting to the F-70 around my neighborhood. I had to cut the sensitivity to about 30 and was able to hunt quite well. I think I had the threshold on "0". Does adjusting the threshold into negative territory cut back on chatter? Still learning.

cutting back the threshold to -3 will help

Not surprised that you like it despite what seems to be shortcomings. I love mine with the exception of trying to set it down without it falling over and using headphones in thick brush. Torn up too many headphone connectors too quickly because of that jack sticking out of the back of my elbow. And in thick brush, elbows are the edge of clearance. Going to try the wireless headset with it this spring to fix that.

I can run mine with sense really high, sometimes maxed out and with thresh up to 0 in a lot of the ground around here and it's quiet until it goes over a target in the ground, keeping disc at 15. When I'm in pulltab/foil graveyards I turn the disc up to 21 to save the ear splitting, never-ending hits. Have fun!
