I have one of these detectors and it is one of my favorites. I have used almost every brand out there, and different models of each brand, bought and sold LOTS of detectors, and this one will not leave my arsenal.
This unit is one of the most underrated detectors on the market, probably due to not many out there, no advertising and possibly by the way it looks ! Once you learn how to use the features and set the machine up, this unit will find deep coins and hit on low conductive targets such as gold and lead HARD. There are lots of options, you can set up discrimination break points in discrim or all metal, ground tracking speed, auto or manual ground balance, turn on or off the deep search function for greater depth in mineralized soil, etc.
The audio on this unit is probably one of the best I have used. I have mine mounted on a straight shaft and after using it awhile, I don't even have to view the LED lights to determine what the target is. Once I set the break point between 'good' targets I want versus 'bad' targets I don't want to dig, the audio tells me loud and clear. In addition, the sweep speed is perfect for me...not too fast or slow and the recovery speed is very quick.
There are only two negatives I would say about this machine...one is cosmetic which is the stock configuration is not good. I would love to see Discovery change the shaft or at least make it where you can mount it under the cuff. The second is more personal in that it takes at least two reads through the manual to understand how the settings are changed. But once you understand, the face plate of the control box makes it intuitive and you don't forget. There are only 3 or 4 settings that you may want to change once out in the field anyway...sensitivity, discrimination break point, tweaking the ground balance and possibly turning on the deep search function.
I suggest anyone interested to go to the Discovery site or JB's web site and check out the manual and some reviews/field tests. This unit is really great and the 5 inch coil is superb in tot lots and trashy parks. I have both coils, and will probably in the future, talk to my dealer to try to see if he can find me a DD coil. The only problem with this new model is that the coil connectors for the older 8 inch coil and DD are not compatible. WHY NOT DISCOVERY !!
