F19 silver and GOLD

After my slim pickings at the old school I was back at it on a beach I hadn't done in a while. The F19 found me an 18k gold ring ! It's a small and delicate ring at 2.3 grams but I'll take it. There are two interesting diagonal bands in front. One appears to be rose gold and the other white gold. I was picking everything up past iron. The ring was barely 1 inch deep and a solid 52 on the F19. When I got it out, I could not make out the tiny markings inside so a younger park attendant looked at it and told me he could make out an encircled 750. He said "It's not gold sir, there is no karat markings." and he seemed terribly disappointed for me as I had just told him I had struck gold. I knew it wasn't silver because nothing this size made of silver could give me a low ID of 52. Then I looked up on the web and found out that some makers do not use the universal karat markings but use the purity content as a decimal instead much like they do with silver. There is a makers mark as well but I can't make it out even with a powerful magnifier.

I also found lots of clad of course, an old thimble, a matchbox "troop carrier" jeep, a few lead soldiers with no heads, a religious medal, a 9mm shell (what the heck is this doing on a public beach?) and a broken bracelet that seems to be made out of copper. When I got home I started cleaning the clad and what I thought was a regular dime turned out to be a George the 5th 1931 silver dime. It's blackened beyond belief. The worst looking silver coin I have ever found (It's directly under the ring in the photo). I was still glad to find silver there. The silver has all been plucked out a while ago or so it seems. Among the older finds were a 1956 and 1944 wheat penny and a 1947 Canadian George the 6th penny.

I haven't photographed all the trash I dug out to get the gold and silver but there were lots of it. Nails, screws, washers, small and big foil, pull tabs, bottle caps, paper clips, buttons, etc. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to get gold but it's addictive.

That's a lot of targets! Good digging

Very nice gold ring!

Silver and Gold in the same hunt.....very nice!

Thanks guys. Now if i could only find a really meaty one in the high nickel range with a shiny white rock on it !

As you know I very seldom use a large size search coil such as a 7 by 11 double d. What coil were you using on your f19 for Beach hunting, and for other detecting applications what would you say are your two favorite search coils for that model?

Hi Monte. Good to see you here and thanks for your time with all my questions.

I use all kinds of coils with the F19. All the coils that were used with the F5 I still have except for the concentric of course. Since the beaches I go to are just moderately trashy, I use a big coil because my time is very limited (I can only detect one weekend out of two). I like to cover lots of ground fast when trash is limited. The Detech Ultimate is almost always on it for beach usage. I've used the stock 7 X 11 on many occasions as well. I only use the stock 5 X 10 or 5" round in trashy parks or sports fields. Last year I used the Mars Tiger in an old school yard where trash was more abundant. I found lots of interesting items but I suspect I'd find more with a smaller coil or with the CoRe and OOR 5 inch. I need to go back there but as I've mentioned, time is limited. Anyway, the Mars Tiger impressed me a lot. Super light for its size, solid and a much more compliant cable than the one on the Detech which is stiff. Separation seems equal to my 7 X 11 and it goes deeper. I've never tried the Mars Sniper 6 X 10 but I would like to.

Mike, nice hunting old buddy. I'm in a dry spell so I need some post like this to get my motivation up.

Thanks. Sometimes it's just a question of finding a new place to hunt and research online can help a lot. Just last weekend, I went to another new place to me which used to have a century old house on it that was demolished by the city who bought the property and converted it to a park. I detected for about 2 hours before the rain set in. No silver yet but you know an area holds promise when you find old pennies, square nails or other relics. I found a 1950 and 1956 Canadian penny and a 1946 wheat penny. Silver can't be far away.

Good luck !

Finding in the river. Celtic Ax

Very nice Daniel. No chance of finding this here ! Is that the Mars 7" round coil on your F19 ???

Yes it is the Mars MD coil "7. I find many Celtic and Roman artefacts. I live in the south of Slovakia

it does not look the best, but 2000 years underground ...
Emperor Claudius Germanicus 41-54 AD - sestertius

So much history in these little round pieces of metal. Fascinating.

I've never found anything 18k, but I remember seeing my mother's older jewelry. The 18k had a really rich color you don't see in modern jewelry. Maybe someday I'll find one.
