F2 burning a hole in my pocket.

I just joined up and have just gotten into MD'ing. Thanks to Bart at Big Boys I am now the proud owner of an F2 the the standard and sniper coil, as well as Garrett Pro Pointer. All winter we had weather in 50's (unseasonably warm for Indiana). Literally the day my MD arrived in the male we had a cold front come through and the ground has been frozen since. I have logged a lot of hours on you tube and the forums but nothing else. I also ended up getting a digger at Lowe's. I might invest in a lesche later on this summer but I figure this will at least get me through the spring while the ground is soft. I have a State Park near by that allows hunting and has a beach area but the park is relatively new (late 70's) so I don't expect any silver but who knows what else might be around. I plan on mainly hunting parks and any private properties I can. My brother in law started last summer and talked me into joining the hobby. I have always been interested just never pulled the trigger.

welcome to the forum the f2 is a great little unit you should do well . it take practice tot lots and beaches are good places to start easy digging tell us how you do hh

All those posts and youtube vids you've been watchin' will be a great help. Both for developing your own style, and for inspiration to stay outdoors! You know, I bet within a mile of your house theres probably several pounds of silver, and maybe one of gold thats been lost through the ages...something to think about eh?

In my home town there is the remnants of what used to be a canal that went through Indiana. Most of it has been built on and filled in. My dad made the comment the other day that he knows where the tole station used to be. He said it is not part of a field and in the woods but there is some documentation of the canal route and I have a friend that knows the history of the canal. I would love to find the place where the toll station used to be. My old neighbor when I was a kid lived in a house that belonged to General Meredeth during the civil war. I don't know who owns it now but that is another spot I have in the back of my mind. I am going to try to get some practice in around my house so I half a$$ know what I am doing before I go digging around on other people's property.

Those sound like some exciting spots! I'm pretty much a megacladgrabber, but I'm new to this too. It will be my second year in April. Its been an awful winter for sweeping the sledding hills, no snow, and what has fallen melts quickly. Did alright on the slopes last year, and even in the summer at the base of old sledding hills or any old halfway slanty looking spot. You are right about digging/target retrieval skills...the quicker and more proficient you can get, the more you can aquire in a specific amount of time, so I suggest work on speedy retrieval, dont be digging a hole like an archaeologist with a toothbrush and a spoon, the more targets you get per outing, the quicker you will learn the language of your machine. An old guy I met on one of mys first times out told me "dig 1000 pennys, and dig 1000 pulltabs" that was good advice! We sure will enjoy watching your progress, and just wait until some of the other posters start warming up in the Spring! This place is a blast!

You deserve the thanks Bart!. My brother in law is planning to upgrade from his Bounty Hunter to an Ace 350. I have told him to call you, once it warms up again you should be hearing from him.

Welcome and good luck!!! You will get the hang of it quick with that F2,and soon will be upgrading yourself, haha its addicting, your only prob is the same as mine and mud the seasons to short!!!!...hh rick in mi.

I came home from lunch today and couldn't stand it anymore. In my dress close and the mid 30 degree temps I went into my front yard for about 15 minutes and dug 4 times and retrieved 4 targets. They were all trash but at least I wasn't digging a bunch of empty holes. It doesn't take long to appreciate the pro pointer. I can see what it would be like without it.

My next question is with the pin pointing feature on the F2. Do you lift it up off the ground several inches or what. I noticed when I have it on pin point and close to the ground almost gives a constant signal. Is this normal? I think I read that the number display on the screen when using the pinpoint is supposed to be the depth of the target. Are these usually accurate? Last but not least when using the pin point mode does it typically get the loudest when the target is in the middle of the coil? I just haven't had time to drop some stuff and run any experiments. Today was the first day that the ground wasn't frozen and the snow melted melted so I decided to try to dig a few instead of experimenting.

Thanks

shallow targets can be tricky to pinpoint raising the coil a few inches helps . dont much matter on deeper targets . the way i retrieve targets is the deeper the target the bigger the plug in parks and school yards i dig a horshoe shaped flap leavining the sod attached and flip it over keeps the grass from dying. if your using the stock round coil the signal will be loudest when the target is in the middle of the coil. the 11 inch dd coil is a bit different, practice pinpointing on visable targets first good luck hh

Yeah me too I have got out 3 times now and have found alot of clad and ton an tons of junk in just my yard, still trying to get used to the thing, I what to know what it would say for silver and gold coins tho ? oh and one thing that i dug up was a metal plate that has in reverse the long run on the top and invaded on the bottom and a airplane in the middle it is broke on both side so could be more to it but its cool ,,,prob.... a printing plate or something ,,,It was about 2.5 feet down ...love it

Thanks for the info. With two kids (6 and 3) and the holidays I have been really busy, not to mention work. Hopefully next month it should start warming up here and be the end of February and beginning of March we can get some real detecting done.
