............thinking of getting two Fisher F2's .................looks like a good detector. My wife and I would take them along on road trips and use them for local hunting. This sounds crazy; but I have found more finds and higher quality finds with my cheaper detectors than with the many "flagship" units I have owned. I enjoy the speed and simplicity!! But I'm not sure if F2 is good for gold ring/jewelry hunting? Has anyone had any luck in finding rings with this detector. I've been told by some dealers that the 6 KHZ frequency would not be "hot on gold" and to look for a higher frequency unit. I mostly hunt low mineral "dry sand beaches" and soccer fields/ ball fields and parks. Another thing I was told is not to expect anything deeper than 4 inches..... one dealer ( not a Fisher dealer) said max you can expect from the F2 is 4 inches period!! Is this so?? I get the feeling there is unfair criticism of the F2 wonder why? Could you fellow F2 users give me some tips on using this unit please.Should I go ahead and buy two of these?? Also, how far apart would the units have to be to avoid ..crosstalk? Finally is this a good choice for my type of hunting ??

Ivan,
My dad has an F2 and my daughter has an F4. I know for a fact the F2 will go deeper than 4" in the area where we live. I have used them both and would recommend either one but I really like the F4. For a few dollars more you can get a good F4 and it uses the double D coil and is extremely good at the kind of hunting you are talking about. The F4 has manual ground balance, which might help in sand and also has all metal mode. I'm sure the higher freq machines might do better on small gold but either of these machines are no slouch. They are both good detectors and don't believe that 4" stuff.

F2 owner
I get deeper than 4 inches but 6 would be a stretch
for the money I think they are great
I prefer round coils over DD coils. easy to pinpoint
correct the F4 does ground balance but I am happy with the F2 on parks
nice and light and can be swung all day
your wife would love the F2
and there are only 534 000 000 thousand coins that are still missing in the first one inch of soil so you better get digging.
F2 = KISS

I have one and I love it!
I bought it to use on vacations and as a backup to my Vaq, but it is so much fun I use it more than I originally planned.
I have read tons of posts and reviews on this unit before I bought it, and I have a concluded that not all units that come out of the factory are the same.
Some are "tuned" or "tweaked" to perform a little better than others.
In the case of Fisher, about 50-50 seems to be the ratio between good and great.
My opinion only, but If this is true, I got one of the great ones.
8 inches is about the limit on air testing, and I have found coins, and especially dimes at 7-8 inch depth.

I did find a silver ring in a tot lot, the thing devours coins, the tones are pleasant and it is easy and fun to use.

I did several hours testing and I posted a review on another forum, here:

My son uses my F-2 since I upgraded and he loves it ,and I loved it when I was using it , I agree it is a coin monster very simple to use have found silver rings and my first 1898 IH penny, found over 50 dollars in change in less than 5 mo with it (2-4 hrs a wk hunting) - But BEWARE they run on the same frequencies and they could interfere with each other if you get to close to each other. my son was at a coin hunt and every time the one guy using a F-2 also came within about 8 ft or so it would go nuts. You can it depths of 4-8 inches HH Stryker

Hi Ivan, I also use the F2 and while I find it good in dry conditions, it is pretty rubbish on wet sand or near salt water. I have found some deep coins with this MD and for the price it is good value.
If you want a turn on and go unit it fits the bill very well but in my opinion its lack of manual ground balance is its biggest draw back. I have found lots of coins with it but no silver or gold and have read that
it is not great for jewellery hunting....I hope to prove this wrong but am still trying. Best of luck with your research.
Pullringking.

It hits silver rings and gold rings as well as any machine. You just need to be over them and willing to dig a lot of trash for gold rings
wet park sand is fine
wet beach sand is more difficult

If your going to get two machines you might wont to consider doing what we did (assuming its still available) we got the F2 package with the extra coils, pinpointer, bag etc and an F4, that way you get the range of coils from the 4" to the 11" dd and the f4 which gives you all metal and ground balancing.

They are both fine for gold rings, but as Alimo says above they do vdi in the 30s which is pull tab territory... though they do "sound" different if you walk around the target rings will be more likely to be a solid target while pull tabs jump around a bit. This is my thinking anyway and I'm sure not hard and fast. Though with me if I can walk around a target and get consistent numbers all the way around I dig it up.. but to be clear I use the 11"dd coil all the time.. it will probably be different with the other coils.. I'll have to test it out...

I doubt you will find depth a problem we get pretty tiny coins at 6 inches easy.

I just got a F2 a couple weeks ago ,Its a great little coin getter.Mine goes deeper than 6 inches no problem.especially when ground has moisture in it.Most good stuff is in that 4 to 5 inch anyway..Get package deal with the 8 and 4 inch snipercoil and pinpointer you can't beat it for money. I had a penny and dime together in same hole yesterday and it ID them both.It is not a waste of money as some say.The VDI is also real accurate, and I like the 4 tone ID too.Its pretty much right on IDing stuff if it says foil its foil, tab is tab.etc.

4" is BS!!! I have a shallow test garden a about 3" but my F2 can easily hit them with the little 4" coil and will do so if I raise the coil off the ground another 3 or 4", and with sensitivity set LOW! I don't know about the F2 for gold, but I would think it would do it okay, but! you would need to work out some VID numbers by air testing some gold objects and recording the number average for each. BUT! keep in mind that much of the gold will come in around foil, so if your hunting soccer fields be prepared to dig a lot of junk!

yea really I have found gold rings and necklaces down to 5 inches on the beach. Only thing is that gold shows up as nickel up to just below quarter. really I think the size of the gold jewelery has a bearing on what VDI number it pings back. as far as silver and other refined metals. I have dug quarters at 6 inches and larger objects like caches and large iron down to 12 inches with the 8 inch stock coil. Don't believe that 4 inch stuff. only if you are using the 4 inch coil. when I use the 4 inch sniper coil the max depth is around 4-5 inches with the sensitivity set on stock 75%. hope this all helps
