F4- More questions

Day two with the F4 and still learning. Today I called Fisher to clear up some questions that were not in the manual. Fisher told me that Ground Balancing using that manual control on the machine was only necessary in All Metal and that it was done automatically in Discrimination Modes. I reread the manual and no where is that stated. Does that sound right???

I also asked about a mode called "All Metal Discrimination" which sounds like an oxymoron , but he could not even explain that mode and how Gnd Bal was used in that mode. Is it auto or manual?

I am still playing and enjoying the detector but the desire to understand it is driving me crazy. The manual is poor, they mix the terms Auto Tune which the manual states is a mode that must be ground balanced with the term All Metal which is a ground-balanced mode. Very confusing.

i checked utube theres some vidios on there about the f4 http://www.youtube.com/results? search_query=fisher+f4+metal+detector&oq=fisher+f4&aq=1&aqi=g6&aql=&gs_sm=c&gs_upl=138l2994l0l4872l7l7l0l1l1l0l621l1539l1.2.2.5-1l6l0

What part of the country are you in,Lance? I'm in the Northwest are and would like to know how this machine does in the difficult soil in the Washington/ Oregon area. Is your unit falsing alot? I read the online manual. There is two different 'all metal modes'. The first allmetal mode is the one marked auto tune. It emits constant monotone if passed over a target. The manual says that this mode is a " ground balanced" mode, but then a few sentences later says that machine must be ground be manual ground balanced to hunt in this mode. The other allmetal mode is a discriminating mode that the machine defaults to when its turned on. Doesn't say anything about this mode needing ground balanced. Thinking about buying one of these. What I would like to know is if there is a way to hunt continuously in pinpoint mode without having to keep my finger on the pinpoint button. Manual says that pinpoint mode offers ''The greatest sensitivity to large, deeply-buried objects....." and that it is possible to hunt in the pinpoint mode.

i dont think you could hunt in pinpointing mode on fishers they have a pp button you would have to hold down constantly and the audio they make when pinpointing would drive ya nuts after a while they may be some fishers that are different you might call bart at big boys hobbys he seems to knows alot about most detectors good luck hh

No need to keep the pp button pressed all the time... one click - pp - one click - last mode ...

I had an F4 and also a BH Landstar which is identical in operation to the F4. If I remember correctly, (I can be wrong, It's been a while) you don't have to GB in the discriminate mode. But you need to GB in A.M. mode because if you don't you will get inaccurate depth readings. This is because the pinpoint mode is A.M and when you are pinpointing and checking depth unless you GB before hand you will get inaccurate depth readings.
