I'll try and make this short.
I volunteer for the Jefferson County humane society here, and we were doing a fund raiser this past Saturday and the humane society director was there. Well, the humane society owns the property of the current location, plus an adjacent homestead next door. Recently they purchased a new location down the road where there used to be an old turkey farm, and was later torn down and turned in to a furniture store. The property is broken down in to three sections; the house and main hard, the site where the furniture store was torn down, and a big open lot of grass, and all of this is surrounded by farms. Anyway, I asked for permission to hunt all of this, and the director said, "SURE, but only if you promise to come over and hunt my yard!" Then she starts telling me that her house was one of the first homes in my city, and that it was build in the early to mid 1800's! I'm thinking, "what kind of luck do I have?!?!!" Hell yeah I'll come over and hunt your 200 year old house! (not to mention that Fort Atkinson, the original fort, was only a few blocks away from where she lives, so God only knows what I'll find there!
Anyway, my first trip out there yielded the following in the pics. I found three pieces of old toys. One is the back end of an old car, possible a Tootsie Toy brand, one is the steering wheel of an old metal tractor and the REALLY old piece is what appears to be the right side of an old toy gun. I know it's REALLY OLD because is says "Made in the USA" on the side!
Found a ton of clad, mostly from the 60's and 70's, a 1940 silver dime (me loves silver), and OLD Coty of New York lipstick case (heavy, too), a flat button that has the coat of arms of Netherland on it, and the pride of the day was a 24.2 gram, 925 sterling silver spoon made by Towle Silversmiths. Here's a link to where you can buy a new ONE. Check out the price to have to replace this baby in your set! LOL New spoon
Anyway, it was a great day, and it will take many weeks to cover the rest of this property, if not the rest of the summer. I still have the 1850 church site that I have to do yet! Good days are ahead!
