f5 is making noise

twoscoots

New member
I am getting noises when I touch the wire at the controller. It will also false on the rt hand swing sometimes.anyone gat a clue?

Yes my f5 has been back to Fisher 5 times in the last 6 months for the same reason. Same dumb answer user error. Duh just turn it on and it sounds off until you keep turning the sens down to next to nothing. swing it in the air it sounds off,
detector did this from when I first got it. it was supposed to be replaced but guess what you are wright it wasn't. this is a bad coil and control box connector which is beyond FISHER SCOPE OF FIXING.
THIS WILL BE THE LAST FISHER I OWN.
.

@ crusher28. We have consumer laws in Australia that would now allow you a brand new machine or a full refund.
Fisher seems to be coping a quality hammering on this forum of late.
maybe jim_tn could provide a more practical post. 5 times would test the patience of most people

Crusher, I'm not there so I'm not telling you it's user error. But for some reason FT is sending you back a detector that they test and they feel is working properly and when you get it back you feel that it's not working properly.

If it's not user error then maybe EMI issues? It's difficult to understand how the repair you describe would be "beyond Fisher scope of fixing." I wish I could be of more help.

I know I've been totally satisfied with FT's repair service, I'm sorry to see you've had so much frustration with your repair.

I double checked my unit today, just touch the wire or connector and it goes nuts! I've unplugged and replugged the unit several times with no difference. Not an expert but this is not emi but a loose connection or bad soilder joint. Its driving me nuts because the unit was so good before and now I am chasing ghost every few swings. Dropped the sensitivity way down and disc up to a 65 and it beeps and chirps right along(especially if I bump the grass) man, this is my luck.......the heat is starting to break and now NO md! SsSssssssssucks!

Twoscoots, I have to agree with you that it does sound like a bad connection. Call Felix at FT, get a repair # and send it in.

When you say you just "touch" the connector it goes crazy, are you actually putting some pressure on the connector that could be moving it even slightly? If so, it should not be a major task to replace said connector. I believe this is a standard five connector plug that could be purchased at a Radio Shack or another electronics supply house. I am sure they could be purchased over the Net. If you don't have the expertise to replace it, there must be a repair shop that could do so.....a good radio repair shop could do it without a problem.

If you do this, twoscoots, be sure you know what you're doing. Non-authorized repairs could void your warranty since you (or the repair shop) are a non-authorized repairman.

Yea, I'm gonna let the warranty handle it. I might really screw it up. Plus they need to 'kick the tires and change the oil' while its in their hands.

Just spoke with FT and they have no problem with me sending it back for what I described, courtious and direct, that's good enough for me (now to start the shipping.

Marcomo, you are correct.......I did not realize the unit was still under warranty. Letting FT do the repairs would be the ONLY way to go!

I have been using Fisher detectors for over 30 years and never had a problem like this. If I turn the thresh. down to -4 or -5 and leave the gain at 45-70 it's not too bad. Can not turn the thresh to the + side at all with the coil wire plug going crazy where it plugs into the box (noise chatter)

Since that PM went public and was summarized in a way that could lend itself to being misunderstood......

1. It was a specific invitation to a specific person over a specific issue. Normally engineering department does not get involved in customer service issues, that's customer service dept.'s job. Occasionally engineering department for its own reasons or at the request of another department will decide to intervene on a customer service issue. Anyone who sends a repair to my attention or asking for my involvement, unless I or someone else from the factory asked them to do so, I ain't their good buddy.

2. In this specific case, Tom, please follow whatever customer service department's instructions are regarding how to address and ship it, which will probably not be to my attention. But in the package please include a detailed description of what went wrong, and also say that Dave Johnson wants to see the unit before and after the repair. A printout of our correspondence should suffice.
