Bought a used F5 from a friend's relative who no longer has time to MD... the price was right, it's in great shape, and I just couldn't pass this up. It's been 25 years since MDing with a radioshack special and looking forward to getting back into the hobby... I've reviewed a few posts from M Hillis and others in regards to setting, ground balance and EMI which were were very helpful... thanks all.

However, having a challenge with, I think, false signals. I'm still in the learning mode of the F5 and still hunting in my yard... burying coins/trash in my yard and getting a feel for the different sounds with some luck. Outside of that, I'm getting alot of chatter. I've ground balanced (typ GB 54 to 60), settings Gain 65/threshold -3 ( I don't think that is too hot), Disc 26, and I still get alot of chatter. I have overhead electrical lines in my neighborhood (old homes), do you think EMI is the problem. Any advise would be helpful, HH.

Hi Ku,

if you are getting chatter with the coil held still, that is EMI. Drop your threshold another number.

if you are getting chatter with the coil in motion, that is ground noise, trash and such. Verify your ground balance, and if the trash is too much, notch some of it out.

Good Luck,
Mike

Thanks Mike,

You've been very helpful in your other posts and look forward to trying your suggestion. Thanks again.... Ku

I got the samething in my back yard. Then I found out that all the cable wires were under ground in my yard.

Haven't been back out to work with the settings... we have gotten a cold spell in the low 30's and the NCAA March Madness games have been awesome. Looking forward to going back out soon. Thanks for the feedback...
