f5 notes to get started with

I hope these "crib sheets" are correct, if not add too, or take away from. After reading most of mike H. Post I started taking notes. This is what I came away with. Starting out: gain @ 70 threshold @-9. Disc. @ min. Run d2 or d3 mode until ya get the hang of it. Metal mode: gain @ 30-35,threshold @ +1 - +2. If you want high gain, lower your threshold to 0 or into the negative numbers. High trash area: gain @ 70, threshold @ 9. Notch out iron, foil, tabs, and .50 cent. Running hot: gain @ 90,threshold @ 0. Or gain @ 50, threshold @ +5. Machine may chatter when still but stablizes when swung. This is for greatest depth in clean ground (woods). Use a 1 second to 4 ft swing speed. And look at bill ladds video! These are just some of the notes I took to get me started, I hope they can help and if mr. Hillis finds me wrong, (please) correct me as I will be using these notes in the field to get started!

HA!
Thats a lot to take out into the field!

In a nutshell, when you are starting off, limit the audio to something you can make sense of. I do this all the time. This is my top secret advice. Remember you are hunting by audio and if you can't process the audio you can get overwhelmed. If I can't process the audio information the detector is giving me, then I start limiting what I'm having to listen to by using a combination of discrimination settings and notches until I get it where I 'can' process it.

I think you have the various settings ok. The more you use it the more comfortable you'll get with it.

Good luck!
Mike

Thanks mike, I do wonder about what type of head phones to use? F5 kit comes with a simple set but through the years of guns and various saws(construction) my left ear is at 40percent + rt ear is about 80 percent. Maybe some insight for the not deaf but " is that my cell phone ringing" crowd! I know I am going to have to use headphones of some type to raise the volume of the md but more importantly to cancel out the background noise (wind, airplane, boat motors) I hear bass goooood, high pitch stuff is iffy.
