F70 finds Gold?

Coinseeker 78

New member
Went detecting across the street at a home that had been abandoned. When I went to the back yard I found a considerable amount of overhead power lines generating a high amount of EMI. I adjusted the F70 with the 5 inch coil to have a minimum of chatter and proceeded to sweep the yard. I found some clad and 3 Hot Wheel cars of which two were in pieces. The little toy which looked like a Tootsie toy still had all wheels. I then decided to go to the front yard and found little EMI present. I was able to adjust the detector to 80 Sensitivity, 4 Disc, 4 tones and 9 threshold. I proceeded to sweep the front yard and picked up some more clad and three Wheaties then I got a good quarter signal. I dug the plug and low and behold there lay a 1932 silver quarter at 5 inches. I was thrilled to say the least. I filled my dig and proceeded to sweep and about 3 feet from the last dig I get another good reading. I started to dig and at about 5 inches I spotted a glimpse of gold. As my heart began to beat at a rate comparable to a marathon runner in this nearly 79 year old body I bared the object with my digger and there lay a quarter size gold coin. It had a strange appearance unlike any US coin I have seen. On one side it said 2/12 cents the other side said it was a 1948 year coin. My heart began to drop because I began to realize it couldn't be gold because who would make a 2 1/2 cent coin out of gold. I went to the house and checked Google and found it was a coin from the Netherlands. Oh well, I still had the thrill of the hunt for awhile.

Good job on the silver, anyway. To bad about the gold coin, but when we get over 70 we shouldn't get to excited, anyway. LOL Good hunt. HH jim tn

Nice find on the Silver and I like the truck too........ All in all you Sir, had a great hunt..

Nice work there Coinseeker...You are really working that F70!...I've tried to run a positive thresh, but seems -3 or -5 work for me here, when I Ground Grab, its reading 75ish...nice write up on the day, and especially about the EMI. That HZ button on your machine comes in handy for that too? hope you find a gold brasher coin on your next run..!

Hi there coinseeker.

That's a nice one to find in the US. I live in The Netherlands and found my first 2 and a half cents recently, after 3 years detecting, so they are not found that often.

The 1 cent variant is found a lot, called a lion cent, because of the dutch lion at the back side.

Thanks for the information. However is the coin gold in color or was it plated by someone for a jewelry item. There was a hole at the top of the coin like for a chain.

The coin is made from bronze, when polished or has been hit when digging it may shine a bit.

This page shows these coins in mint condition, these coins also shine a bit.
