F70: NEL snake for "trash" coil?

NCtoad

Member
Anyone have both and can make a comparison? I get in some really trashy sites at times and one of these will be my next coil. I already have two NEL coils; a thunder and the hunter and really like them, so I'm leaning towards the snake and it's cheaper too, but would like some opinions on the 5" fisher DD.

I wish I had something to compare the Snake to, but I found it does a great job of separating buried items. The other day on EBay, I saw where the Fisher 5" sold for less than half of a new Snake. That would be hard to turn down. I imagine all of those small coils do a great job.

I am running a F75 and I have both the 5" and the NEL snake, I would say the 5" actually has a little smaller foot print than the snake so for the trash I would go with the 5".

As for depth the 5" is just a shade deeper, but not enough to pick one over the other.

Hello NCtoad,

I posted a similar question back in Aug., when looking for a trash sifting coil for my F75.

From feedback, and my own research, I came to the same conclusion as ron's above. No performance differences were noteworthy between the Snake and 5".

I ended up getting the Snake, based on it being a better value, and I preferred the size/shape. I am very pleased with it's performance and build quality. No regrets in getting it.

Thanks for all the replies! I'll save up my money and keep looking on Ebay and the classifieds for one or the other.

I bought one but haven't used it. Any opinions on it?

Hay Mike,

I got the little football concentric, and it has been my go to coil for several years. I call it in the same class with the NEL Snake DD and the 5" round DD, the target separation is not as good on shallow targets as the DD coils, but once you get down to 3" the separation is excellent. The depth with the 3x6 football coil is better than the 2 little DD by a little.

I gave the CORS Shrew coil (identical to the NEL Snake) a workout on my Racer2 last weekend. It worked great, albeit with one issue. The site I was working has a fair amount of decomposed square nails, and I was trying to go by tones alone (in 3-tone mode) and started digging a few of those decomposed square nail that were sound off with a nice high tone. After a dug a few I started to pay attention to the TID numbers an noticed that they were coming in the high 90's, so it was getting some iron wrap around. Once I had that figured out, that little coil was surgical, with great depth.

YMMV on the Fisher F series machines, I don't have one to test on my F75.

HH,
Brian
