F70, SLQ, and a rusty nail.

Hey all, I just got my F70 today and took it out in the yard for a few tests. I buried a SLQ at about 4 inches and went over it. I didn't hear a single sound,chirp,pop...nothing. So I dug it up and found a big rusty nail in the hole. I took the nail out and it rang out loud and clear. I thought I would at least hear some sign of the silver quarter in the hole. Any opinions? Also, what would be some good starting settings for the F70? Thanks.

Were you at the factory presets? Which coil were you using? Remember, it's the first time you've swung the rig over a target.

See if you can replicate the setup, put some nail/junk next to or near a good target.

Then go try it again. But first, note your settings. Now go into the menu and change one set of settings at a time. Until you are hearing something. Disc is first, cut it down until you get all the targets giving a response. Then go to sense and turn it up or down until your rig can define the targets as you swing slowly over them. Very slowly!

Go on to thresh and set it as high as you can until you get the quickest, clearest response from the targets with out chatter from nearby ground mineralization.

Do all this with tones at 3 or 3H so you'll also get some audio indication.

All this assumes you've learned how to use the pinpoint function and know where the sweet spot under the coil is. The sweet spot is the point under the coil where the best target response from any given target can be had. Pinpointing is one of the most vital functions on any detector. Without getting the coil directly over the best spot above the target it's easy to see why newbies and rogues alike are digging big plugs for targets only 3" deep.

So get your air test down pat. The air test tells you nothing about the depth of the machine, but it helps immensely in determining where under the coil the targets are. That does not mean air test targets from one or two inches above them. Do it from 5-6" above them. Learn to find the best target indication and where it is under the coil.

Then you can hit that SLQ with a nail above or very near it, at least with the F70, from my experience.

I took a short video of what happened. I did a reset and notched out iron and foil.

I'm over in the west part of the State..MKG we have good ground..got a JFK half yesterday right up tight to a chain link fence (4" deep)
Disc 10, Sens 60, Thresh -3, dE mode, DP tones, 11" DD coil
You will get the hang of it...I hunted in AT all last year, and boy is that tough! If you are close by, maybe lets get together? If not, PM me and we can talk. Check out some of the other posts from the F70 guys...thats what I did when I found this site last October, and it really helped A LOT!

I live in Gladstone, in the Upper Peninsula. I managed to find a few things so far but that test I did really bothers me. One small nail knocks out a silver quarter totally. I also noticed that I didn't find one target so far that pinpointed over 5 inches deep. I'm not giving up yet though.

I looked at the video. Still didn't see any settings, any change in your direction of swing, etc..

The F70 does not have an iron null, so you might have had the disc up a ways. But given that the quarter was 4" below the nail per your accounting of the setup, not very surprised at all. As I have dug coins that were both next to and below nails with my F70, I can only suggest you do it again, while changing settings and direction of swing.

I hunt primarily in an area littered with pull tabs and bottle caps...lots of old coins there too though. What settings do you think would be the best for an area like that? I was running disc:20 Sens:70 Thresh:-3 yesterday and the results were average. I found that when I would get a high tone in trash it wouldn't pinpoint very well..it would be about a foot and a half each way because it would automatically switch to the trash target near the good one. In regards to the change in direction of swing, I don't think it really applies since I was getting zero signal...I could see changing directions when you already have a hit but how do you know to do it when you're not.

The best places to hunt in it are in the bottlecap and pulltab areas where the beer tents were...maybe its just the amount of time I have on my F70...you can tell the difference between the bottlecaps and q's..maybe its the DP tones...or maybe because I raise the coil up off the target when I get a hit, and sort of zero in from altitude...I can say that the pinpoint is right on, the sound lets you know how deep it is..I stab with a screwdriver to find the coin. You got a good disc setting and thresh, try dropping the sens to 60..or lower. you running the 11"DD? I bet the 5" would be better in this type of situation, but I'm making due with the 11. Theres a sweet spot on the coil that will help you locate and get your coins even around all that trash...Zeekeyes should be along momentarily with some advice...he finds a lot more old silver than I do.

This area is just filled with junk, I've been using the 11'' as I don't have the 5''. Maybe the 10'' would be better in this environment.

I'll be hitting that park I was talking about tomorrow am..just checked it out at sundown the guards just left, the tents are all torn down, it was an irish festival last weekend, its a challenge, but I think I've got it figured out, been working it all summer after every festival leaves..Its built on old slag fill from the foundrys, I'll see what kind of settings work best for you, and take some pics. The daughter went, and has a map where the jewelry tents were. Its no challenge to find where the beer tents were!

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons FT took the Fisher line into the F series was to add the DD coil config to it's lineup. The DD coil is preferred in trash, though I'd think the concentric would ID a little better and deeper. But I have had good luck with my 5" DD coil, and it does spend a lot of time on my rig.

Check out Mudpuppy's latest post, he's going to some fairground-like hunting. The 11" coil is better at surface finds for a simple reason, ground coverage. But if you are in a trashy area, the 5" coil is super at picking apart the trash. If it's not too trashy and targets are deeper, go back to the 11" coil.

To the nail question: Setting your disc lower will let you hear when you get on that nail, then you slow down to see if there is an additonal target co-located.

I always heard the 11" was a magnet for crown caps...I know it was on my Omega8000. I had the F70 out again in that trashy campground....still haven't had one target pinpoint over 5inches. I hope I'm ground balancing it properly...is it better to GB in AT or disc mode? I've just been putting it in AT..try to find the cleanest spot possible, hold the ground grab, and pump it til the number settles down...which is usually in the low 80's. I also am a very fast sweeper, I wonder if I should slow down with the f70...even though the recovery speed is great.

I GG in AT...then scroll the disc up. I have no problems with the crown caps...I'm a fast sweeper too, but in the trash, I settle down and go slow...I got only 4 q's and 9dimes, 3n, and @20 pennies in an hour this am before a storm rolled in...NO fresh drops! Did somebody beat me to the place? This ground screams signals in the 80's-90's all over the place, its really loud, but they are nothing but false signals from all the trash. so its tough to hear the solid 84's a q makes. I had disc15, sens55, -3 thresh, DE,mode, DP tones. Several coins were maybe 4", two instances of stacked coins. If you are not GG, sometimes the PP is off, sometimes its not, so I usually dont GG unless I cant PP your machine will tell you if it likes the set up or not...every once in a while, I'll hit the HZ button to see if it helps..

Sens at 55 seems a bit low doesn't it? I hope I can get some more depth out of mine, then again maybe I'm just in an area with few deep coins. I like to use dp as well, I wonder if one set of tones works better than others for coin shooting. I wish the f70 was a bit more like the Omega8k which I could run the sens at max without any noise at all...I would sometimes have to check to make sure it was on and working properly it was so darn quiet. I can tell the f70 has the potential I just have to have the perfect settings I think.

I suppose I could just go to a cleaner area to detect but I think there are good things to find amongst the rubbish. I've pulled a few older coins out of there...1894 Injun, 1910 Barber Dime, handful of mercs and rosies and a 52 Franklin half...the ground was being occupied since the 1600's so I hold out hope for something really old at the expense of sore knees from digging lots of trash.

Jason: Why don't you try Sens@45, Thres@-7 It will run very quiet and you will be surprised. Try running AT mode with these settings you will get deeper but you can also run DL and in Disc. Or you can run Sens@45,Thres@+9, it will be noisy. You could also run Sens@99 and Thres@+9. Some guys run this way but it takes a lot out of you but you will be digging deeper targets. Try running SL speed with these settings. On the F70 you can operate the Sens and Thres in different combos to change how the F70 reacts. I also did some experimenting with Sens@55, 60 with different setting on Threshold. The higher you go in the plus on the threshold settings the more noise because you will be picking up smaller targets. Don't knock it until you try it out in the field.
I had the 11" coil on and ran Sens@45, Thres@-7, Speed@SL, and AT mode on the beach yesterday to see if I remembered the setting from when I first got the F70. I dug everything. 4 of the coins were down 8" plus. Of course the can was down 14". You will have to detect differently. Your looking for hisss type of sound. The F70 does take some practice and adjusting but you will notice it does get deeper targets.
I guess what I am saying is the F70 will adjust to your ground conditions if you know how to do it and can adjust to what it is telling you.
Sorry don't want to take over the thread just thought you would like to see picture?
Thanks for looking and Happy Trails.....Z

Thank you very much, I can experiment with some of these settings when I go pack to the camp ground this evening. I don't expect to get 10 inches on a coin but would be very satisfied with 6-8 inches.

Don't be surprised if you do get 10" on a coin. Only done that once with mine, but I run hot most of the time. Remember that magic number 80, it's where a lot of those silver jewelry items will be found. Right between the usual number set for a silver dime and clad quarter.

As to the crown caps. Well I dig them if I think there's the possibility of a good target under them. Since there's always the possibility, dig 'em once in a while. As often as you can. The only sure way to cut through a trash layer is to remove it, no matter what machine you're using.
