I was headed to hunt the old woods this morning, but when I saw Jim I decided to stop and detect with him in the open area. It's the same area where I found the Spanish Reale coin. The area is loaded with iron. My detector sounded like a Gatling Gun going off. I was using the 11 inch DD coil, discrimination was set at 6, sensitivity was set at 87, using the Boost mode and 4H tones. I got a funky signal that was not much better than a can slaw signal in between the iron tones. I dug down and popped out a sterling silver decorative plate? I really don't know what it is. It's nice though.:) I also found a 1950 wheat penny, a brass lantern piece, a junk bracelet, some old lead bullets, a tag with '27' on it. After seeing Jim off and eating a sandwich, I hit the woods and found a 1904 Indian Head Penny and some more bullets. I'm going to take a smaller coil when I go back to the iron pile to see how it will do. The boost mode works great in iron. I just don't move the coil very fast.

I forgot about the old button that I found near where I found the sterling silver piece.

No Elton that's not it.:) On the back it has 5 rivets and whatever it was attached to couldn't have been over a 1/32 of an inch thick.

So that rules out leather and wood. Maybe cloth? Hopefully someone will come along and tell us what it is.

Does it have any markings on it? HH jim tn

Nothing more than 'STERLING' stamped on the front of it. The 5 little short rivets attached it to something. Nothing thick though.

Excellent finds tabman,

Just love the decorative plate, it's awesome.

Nice finds Tabman, How about the possibility of an old purse or a very old book? Its definitely a cool piece to find . Ezra

Just a thought ........... or a jewelry type box........

Definitely a good hunt. Perhaps the silver decoration came from some sterling silver service piece such as a serving plate, bowl, or some other piece. That came to mind as I watched the Antiques Roadshow tonight and there was an early New Orleans silver service featured that had similar decorations. Just a thought.

Good hunting,

Some images produced with Google search using ((antique sterling silver purse clasp)) shows some pretty promising hints to what your sterling piece may be.

Or better yet because of it's smaller size possibly half of the clasp from a antique coin purse.

It was probably filled with a bunch of gold and silver coins. I know someone who is looking for a gold coin.

I found 1/2 reale not too far away from where I found this decorative piece of silver.

Awesome find, you've got something now

that one shot gun shell looks old,, because the primer is made into the shell, right ?? By the tag with 27 on it..
What is the thing that looks like a bent nail, touching the silver thingy ??
Great finds..

All the shotgun shells I find should be around 1900 or early, since the park has been there that long. The other item is a lantern wick turner. I find brass lantern parts all the time at this location.
