The FCC regulates the maximum amount of output a metal detector for use in America can have.
 
But since it is radio frequency related it most likely is....though I thought I read somewhere that it wasn't anymore.by someone who insinuated it wasn't regulated now.. They never really said 100%
 
They limit the measureable field strength at certain distances. For most metal detectors freqs that measurement has to comply with a measurement taken at 300 meters from the transmitter. Practically speaking they're never going to come close breaking the regulation. The reason the makers don't just crank up the transmit power is that you just get back more reflection from the soil and and junk that would hide the good targets, not reveal them. Better to work on better receivers and processing.
