Farm Field Finds --First Post

Meander

New member
Hi all.
Been lurking around here for a while.
Been talked about a little.
So i figured I might as well post.
Would have done it a little bit sooner, but had some tech issues:throw:
(I'll go ahead and apologize now since this will be probably be long!)

Went out on Monday (President's day) to the same set of fields where the Standing Liberty quarter was found.
I had a really GREAT day!:jump::super:

It was I, Mike (Va Bch) & Darren (Va) --who showed up a little later
Mike & I gridded a small field that we didn't touch the first time time out.
Came up with nothing!
Mike maybe found a wheatie.
I was doing what I normally do--my nickname I gave myself Kleanup Karl--& not in a good way--I'm normally finding all the trash so others can find the good stuff!:rage:

Moved over to the field where the SL was found. We split the field in half. I started in the middle and Mike started on the edge.
Darren is over in a nearby field doin' his thing!
Doing the usual and came upon a good repeatable signal.
Thought to myself--"this will be a keeper!"
Took my time, pinpointed to the best of my ability, Dug a nice plug so not to damage my goods!
Found it!! & it was a button!! A small Great Seal button!
Re-energized--I kept going to find more, morE, moRE, mORE, MORE!
A few rows later.....Found another button!!! It had a script "P" on it.
It was identified as a police button over on the relic forum (ThanX!!)
These are buttons 3 & 4 for me. The first one is a police button (police written across it) and the 2nd was a flat button

Finished the first half of the field--nothing else found to write home about--Took a Water/Snack break.
Went back out to do the other half of the field.
Darren found the first silver of the day:rant::buds: A Merc dime.
Swingin' along and I hear a nice High tone....36...:twodetecting:
Nawwww, couldn't be..
Swingin' to get a good idea of where it is at...37...moved 90 Degrees...a repeatable 38.....Nawww, couldn't be
Mike is close by and asks what I got. I tell him and he yells "Dig it!"
I once again make a nice little plug and have isolated it and using my hand-held pin-pointer to find it. Mike is waiting to see what it is SO of course, it's playing hide & seek!
Finally found it!!:clapping:
A Silver 1945 George Washington Quarter!!:yikes:

The rest of the hunt, found a wheatie, buckle and a coin-like object that came up a solid 32.
Darren & Mike were cleaning up on the wheaties

Rest of my finds:

I am now a believer that a farm field can hold hidden treasures even though logic doesn't seem to tell me why!!

I am normally the one that gets skunked but this time I finally out-hunted the hunter :punch::devil:
(I know it was the luck of the draw, but gotta enjoy it it won't happen often!)
ThanX Mike for the picture work!
ThanX for reading my novel--My next posts won't be as long nor contain as many smileys.

Hello Karl, I enjoyed the post and it wasn't too long. Also good to see it wasn't just a heap of silver USA coin pics that some other forums seem to overdose on.
John

Nice post Karl! And nice finds. Yes, you spanked me that day. Just goes to show that it's not JUST the machine and it's not JUST the hunter, but often it's necessary to actually run the coil over something good in order to FIND something good! At least it helps a lot. :)

Looking forward to doing it again tomorrow...find one of those elusive Reales maybe???

Meander, that's a great post!! You need to post more often. That was very exciting, and especially being able to "whip" "the big guy" :|once in a while or even once in a lifetime, has to give you some confidence, and the great thing is he's a good sport about it. (RIGHT ON MIKE, FOR BEING A GOOD SPORT).:yo:I just wanted to encourage you to write more posts. That was very interesting and fun. Marc, (beachguy), and I'm a little stunned too, that a farm field would yield anything, let alone the stuff you guys found. Just goes to show, you never know?!?::clap:

Mike, I just wanted to say, that it's so darn much fun having you back on here now and again, I can hardly stand it!:twodetecting:That post by Meander was great, and you really we're a good sport about it. I also have to say, (very sheepishly), your also (REALLY RIGHT), when you say, it helps to actually "run the coil over something" to actually find it. I can't tell you how many people ask me the age old detector question: "Gee, are you finding anything GOOD, with that thing", and you know my history, unfortunantly, I have to reply, no, but, you know, (I tell them), if I actually was able to "sweep the coil over a gold ring or Rolex", and actually "get out my digging tool and dig", I actually might "really find it". It's so simple in a way, but like I always tell em. "You ain't gonna find it, unless the coil passes over the goods". :twodetecting::| Take care, Mike. Beachguy.

He smoked me again yesterday...found an early 1800's Large Cent. I got an Idian, two wheaties, and a plow-beaten silver ring.

I'm glad Karl is doing well. Until recently it was always me finding the stuff and Karl being the one coming home empty handed. He's got some hours on the Quattro now and I think it's definitely "clicking" for him, as I knew it would.

That's a great post Karl! I love the relics and coins. The finds are a nice change from the usual. The buttons are particularly interesting, I thought. Have you been able to date them? Most of the buttons I find on the goldfields here in Victoria can date back to mid-1800's. Sounds like your farm field will keep you going for some time. Gridding will ensure you don't miss any ground. Happy Hunting!
Golden:detecting:

Answering for Karl, the "Great Seal" button dates back to 1902. The other button dates to from 1834 to 1843, going by the backmark info...the company that made buttons them during THOSE years.
