Fast or slow my thoughts..

I believe sort of like painting the ground with with long strokes fairly slow works best for the majority for superior depth, however we have one local young fellow that swings fast
and goes as deep as anyone and gets as many good targets also. Would imagine his younger keen sense of hearing along with massive arms surely helps.
As far as fast and deep I believe when you run with both on they sort of fight each and distort the accuracy and audio of the Explorer so would advise FAST for trashy areas and DEEP for cleaner areas with deep coins. In addendum nice part of the Explorer it excells with many different settings and its up to you to find out what works best in your area..

Someone did a vedio over on minelabowners with one of the major tect guys from minelab. They also agree FAST and DEEP on "conflict". Personally, if i have gain at 10 i dont use deep... now if i reduce my gain to 7 to help with bad ground i do use Deep, but not with fast. Like you said everyone has to find out what works best for them in their area. The Explorer is a pretty forgiving machine if you just learn the basics.

I would guess it depends also on the amount of mineralization in the soil as well as your discrimination you are running and what is in the soil that may null your machine. I've found that when I am passing the coil over good targets near a target that nulls my SE Pro (such as a rusty nail) if I sweep fast, whipping it like a White's for example, I probably won't get the good target to sound. If I take my time and slow down during the null and paint the ground like you mentioned, I will get the good target to sound off, even though I had a null.

In low mineralized areas or those without a lot of trash that nulls you, you probably can swing it faster and not miss good stuff. In the testing I've done on "clean" targets using a faster sweep speed doesn't hurt a thing, but most areas around here that I hunt sadly aren't that clean.
