Due to rain being forecasted for last Thursday and Friday, the boss didn't want to get started on any other projects last week so I got 2 extra days off. I didn't go out full bore, only a couple hours each day. So let's get started!
Thursday, I decided to go out to a Fairgrounds and give it a shot since I have found some Barbers and other Silver's in the past here along with quite a few Wheats, but only in a few certain locations. I figured I would call Dale up and see what he was doing and he didn't have anything going on so I met up with him at Island Park in Fargo, ND. As we headed out to the Fairgrounds in Barnesville, MN, Dale decided to call Tim up and see what he was doing. Tim was washing up a few cars to sell and decided shortly after we called to meet up with us at the Fairgrounds to see what we could find. Rick(ND) was invited to come also but his gear was left at home and he was already in Fargo so he couldn't join us this time. Dale and I started detecting and Tim showed up shortly there after.
We hunted for awhile in the Fairgrounds with Dale getting a Silver finally since he went Silverless last weekend. He pulled out something that I couldn't believe was still there in the Fairgrounds. He managed to pull out an 1898 Barber Quarter with Full Liberty. I have pounded and pounded the area where he had pulled this coin from many times but never when the ground was as wet as it was on Thursday. The ground is really sandy and some of the coins that we found didn't give the greatest signals. We were digging Wheats around the 10" mark and the Quarter was about 8" Deep Dale thought. Dale also managed to snag a few Wheats and a Merc. Tim managed a Merc and 2 Rosie's I believe and a few Wheats also. I did managed to have a 2 in 1 hole which was a 1919 Wheat and a 1914-s Wheat. The 14-s is only in G-4 but it books in the Red Book for $20, which isn't bad for a worn Wheat! I also found a few more Wheats, 1 Silver Rosie, a Play Coin, a Junior Fire Marshal Badge from Hartford Fire Insurance Co. 1963 and a Rubber Nose. Yes!!! A Rubber Nose!!!
And no...I don't think Michael Jackson has visited the Fairgrounds recently, so I doubt that the Nose is his.
Good for the Misc. Category though!
We then decided to go try the Park out on the other side of town since it is very old. Dale detected for awhile and didn't find anything. He then decided he was going to head back to town so I threw my things into Tim's Car and caught a ride back to Island Park later on with Tim. Tim did manage to snag a Silver Rosie at a different spot he stopped at before he came to the Park so he had one more Silver in his pocket. Tim and I detected until it started to get dark out and then packed it in. I only came across 1 Coin which I thought was going to be a Wheatie but was a nice surprise. I got a 26 on Digital that only showed about 6" Deep...so I proceeded in digging a plug and at 6", I thought I seen Silver! The dirt fell over top of the coin so fast I thought I was seeing things. I looked in the hole and I could see just a little area that looked like Silver and then I just sat there wondering what it could be. I then thought maybe it was a Canadian Fish-scale (Canadian Silver Nickel), but soon found out it wasn't. It was a Dime!! I picked it up and noticed it had quite a bit of wear on it. I carefully brushed off some of the sandy soil and seen it was Canadian. I then flipped it over and removed enough dirt to see the date. I was in a little bit of shock when I seen how old it was and also that something this old and made of Silver was still in this Park. The date turned out to be 1893!
I then yelled over to Tim and told him I just dug a Canadian Dime dated 1893 and he just shook his head. Tim then told Dale what I just got and he couldn't believe it either. Shortly after this, Tim found a 1920 Wheatie amongst a bunch of iron. Dale decided to call it quits shortly after this. Tim then went on to find 2 more keepers which were 2 Indian Heads. Then we packed her in and headed home. It was fun to get out with the guys again even though it was only for a short hunt and close to home, with all 3 of us taking home a few more keepers on Thursday.
My Finds for Thursday was 1 Canadian Dime dated 1893, 1 Silver Roosevelt Dime dated 1964, and 9 Wheats dated 10,14-s,19,25-d,26,28,36 and (2)44-d. The Misc. Finds were again the Rubber Nose, Play Coin and the Junior Fire Marshal Badge dated 1963. Now onto the finds for Friday's short hunt!
Friday, I decided to go try out a spot where a house had burned down by Island Park in Fargo, ND for a little bit. There were 2 boulevards to do and part of the yard and the property was being sold by a Realty Company so it should be fair game.
I first started off in the boulevard area. I was using the Pro 11" Coil but soon realized that maybe I should use the Joey Coil since the ground was a little trashy and there was also a Stop Light on the corner of this lot that was causing my XS to chatter a bit. Before I changed coils though, I had already found 1 Wheat and a Mercury Dime, so it was looking good and I had just detected only about 10' of the boulevard. I then proceeded on the boulevard with the Joey Coil and as I went, I noticed someone else had already detected this area since there were holes all over the place...most of them especially in the yard itself still wide open and never re-filled.
Now I don't know about you guys but when I see such STUPIDITY!, it really torks me off and I would love to catch the person that is doing such non-sense and show them just how long they would still have a detector in operating condition because I wouldn't care who the person was, I would snap it in half in an instant and ask them if they had learned anything yet!
Anyways, I continued detecting...waiting for a neighbor to come over and try to blame it on me but thankfully it never happened. As I detected, I started to cover up the holes as best as I could but most of them the grass was torn to shreds and dirt was scattered all over the place making it hard to fill the holes completely but I got it looking better than what it was. I detected the boulevard and only managed another Wheatie.
I then decided since there were holes in the yard, that I might as well detect that as well since someone already had and made a mess and I also wanted to clean it up a bit. I got it looking the best I could and managed to pull out a couple more Wheats and also 3 Indian Heads. I then decided to leave but I think there is other coins there still since the yard seemed to have a lot of iron present so maybe using Rick(ND)'s 6" Coil later on will get a few more keepers out but will have to keep you posted on that one.
The finds were 1 Mercury Dime dated 1917, 3 Indian Heads dated 1883,1898, and 1902, and 6 Wheats dated 10,11,17-d,29,41-d and 45.
Well! That does it for this round of finds but will have more from Saturday's and Sunday's hunts coming up later. Hope you liked the finds and the little story also. Also, please help make the places we detect as spotless as possible and please pick up any junk that you may find out in the field and properly dispose of it. Thank You!
Thanks for looking and to you all, Good Luck and HH on your next hunt.
