few questions about metal detecting in generl

as a few of ya already know i got the f5 as i started a forum on this,and quite a few helped me out alot espesialy u mike the f5 genious i owe ya a beer. one thing though mike said about to only dig signals that hit both ways,what about a high tone,but ony hits in one direction? shold i dig them as well? and also to i noticed that say i just ground ballanced the detector i pump it up and down right ther on the same spot,and they are not in phase im talkin jumps from like 2 apart to 10 and more then goes back in sync for a few then back at its up and down mode again. minerl bar is 0 most of the time for this spot ayways. and I finaly found something besides pop tabs got a musket ball gives me more hope so i wont be wrappin it around the tree anymore not right now anyways. thanks alot yall for helpn me out here

Hey Man! Congratulations on the musket ball! If you can, get to a beach, it will teach you a lot in a hurry about signals, get a sandscoop and dig everything. You will learn right quick about what is what. It just takes a little time to train your ears about signals, and even then you will get fooled a time or two, so the faster you can get plenty of signals dug and Identified and remembered, the better you will get on your F5...you may still get discouraged, pulltabs and pennys and all, but if you stay at it hard, you will find some gold sooner or later. Weird signals can be stacks of coins, or tight spills, or just junk, you really wont know until you dig them and learn from that experience, we cant tell you for certain, just in generalities. A solid repeatable signal of the right tone and size is ALMOST a sure thing, but not always...one thing is for sure, this forum will make your life a lot easier in the learning process, but you still gotta go out and swing as much as possible. I never even bother to ground balance half the time anyway! I'm excited for you, and hope to see some good things from you this year, you got what Mike says is the best machine for inland jewelry hunting, and I dont doubt him on that! A poster called "Crusher" swings an F5 too, look up his posts...Good Luck!

yea im gettin thier startin to figure out wich signals are cans and stuff,but why is it that sometimes i only get a high signal once then thats it dont usualy get it again just that one time? is it a deeper target or something? i definately learned different sites are all different one ya gotta discriminate more,and this one field i been huntin is full of them damm hot rocks grrrr they are a pain in the a ss

yeah jimmy one way signals are usaully deep iron, what i do is try hitting those from differrent angles also see how it pin pointes. the more you dig the more you learn keep at it only gets better hh

i just dont understand like today i had a strong quarter hit was readin like 65 and hit both ways dug it and all went silent i mean this is really getin aggravateing almost to the point about to sell it but i have found some stuff like musket ball,old lock,and some plate that looks old and mabey related to cival war. just hate when i think im diggin something good then no signal at all whats the deal with that one.

Hey there Jimmy. The F5 is a great machine. I have had mine for a little over a year now and have found lots of glad, three gold rings, 15 or so silver rings, other jewelry and a billion can tabs. The trash goes with the territory. But you dig less trash as you learn the machine, so hang in there!!

Many times a 22 cal lead bullet will disappear like that.
Make absolutely sure you GB over an area with zero targets. Check for a clean spot with zero disc or all metal, then GB.
Having a hand held pinpointer helps tremendously. If you don't have one, the old-fashioned way works....fist fulls of dirt across the back of the coil, process of elimination. You can't have rings on, or metal buttons on your coat sleeve. By the way Jimmy, do you wear steel toed boots?

Even some tennis shoes have metal grommets, some waders or boots have steel shanks. And that is all it takes to drive a person crazy.

dont have steel toe boots,just metal lace clips. what im lost on now is i get a strong hit in one direction in the high quarter range,go back to check it and dont get nothing is this something that goes with the hobby and happends?

yep that happens, if you get a signal like that just move on what do you have your sensitivity set at sounds like it might be to hi try running it about 60. hh

i crank it far as i can without a bunch of chitter chatter and false signals. sometimes i do turn it down though. for relic huntin do u use all metal or can u discriminate to like 8 or 9 and still find relics without missin any. i got alot of small nails tht i like to discriminate,but worried about loosen civil war relics. shold the bigger iron stuff ring in as higher number?

yep big iron and even small rusty nails can read as quarters we all have to deal with that, but if your looking for relics dig everything. hh

Have you noticed if some of the dirt is rusty colored ?? The T2 and F75 does this too ..But I would rather dig a few misses than not dig a deep Silver, or relic..

yea the grounds usualy a brown color i live in pa and ground minerls change alot in short distances wich sux. so is silver sometimes perty deep? i thought it would be close to the surface u know bein rings,necklaces stuff like that. juust wondern. also if anyone knows wear they ring in at on the f5 would be of great help i dont have any gold or silver to check it out on. so for hunin relics i shold be runnin all metal and no discriminate? cival war relics mainly but other stuff is cool to. guess alot of cival war relics would be iron wouldnt it?
