Finally a decent find

I have only been metal detecting for a few months now. I started out with a couple of different beep & dig Tesoros and was quickly disappointed after I found out how much trash was in the ground. I have read that if a person put in the time, they could learn how to make these type of detectors work well for them. I was getting too frustrated to fast and it just wasn't fun. I finally decided to bite the bullet & spend the money needed to get a good TID and decided that Minelab was going to be the manufacturer. I could not be happier. I quickly learned how to tell coins from trash and have been doing fine every since. The only problem is that I couldn't get in to anything older.... until today. I was visiting family & happened to have the X-70 in the car. I played around in their yard for a while finding the usual clad and then this. I couldn't believe it. My first Indian head and when I least expected it.

Sweet Indian !! I put a lot of time into beep and digs also and felt as you did . I have 4 detectors now of which 3 are TID . The 6" 18.75 DD X-Terra coil beats the heck out of the small coil on my last Beep + Dig's . Guess I can thin the herd down to 3 now .

Research is very important if you want to find real old stuff. Now that you have a detector that you have confidence with, I would suggest that you spend time researching places in your area and find out where people used to gather back in the old days. If you get into the right areas, even a lesser detector will find some old coins. With the Exterra, you improve your odds. Good luck

Nicely done... I'm in the same boat as you. Learning the ropes on my Xterra-70. Getting a good feel for it, but I haven't found any old coins yet...

It made you smile didn't it! The X-70 is a sweet machine, Like you and majesus I'm learning also and having fun doing it. Living up here in Gold country with quite a number of placer and dredging sites to work on I just have to get moving.

Sweet!! I just found one with my new Xt70 in a churchyard... Great find!!

Great find! One of the most important things you can do as a hunter is have your detector with you at all times.

I do find that I carry the detector with me quite a bit now.
I have a few ideas, but my biggest hurdle is getting enough courage to ask to detect on private property. I never have been too good at asking people for anything, I feel like I would be bothering them. Don't misinterpret my meaning here, though because I don't go without permission. This just means that I usually don't go.

Nice Indian!! I have detected for over 35 years and I still have the same hurdle as you on asking permission. I can only think of a couple of times that I was denied and one of them changed their mind after visiting with them for awhile. In this day an d age people just don't trust anyone so sometimes it is best to visit and let the landowner understand your not there to do any harm just a hobby that you enjoy. Most ask to see what I find and seldom do they ever want any of the loot. I do recall on guy pocketing all of the pennies I dug on his property one time, but for the most part they are just curious to what you dig. So just keep in mind that 99,9% of the time landowners appreciate you asking and will grant permission.

I got turned down about a month ago at a property. But just last week I stopped at a garage sale at a 2 story brick home. The owner said it was built in 1880. I bought some stuff and he asked me to help him move his grill from the back to the front yard to sell. I quickly said I would - and we did. Then I asked if he ever used a detector on his yard. He said no. Then I asked him if I could? He said yes. I told him I would be over after a good rain.
