After an early morning appointment and with hunting equipment in my Edge, I headed off to our old fairgrounds. I had the 11" coil on and headed to a end of the spot that pretty much had only yielded clad and Memorial cents. After digging several modern coins I finally unearthed a wheat cent so slowed down and began working the area with a bit more diligence. A little bit later I hit another wheat cent and just a few feet away got a bouncy 90ish reading that showed very little depth. Dug down about 4" and opened up the hole and in a clod of dirt spotted the wide edge of a silver coin. Broke the clod open and this big silver disc dropped to the ground. "Whoopee" I thought, "another aluminum token." Picked it up and said, "whoa, that's to heavy for aluminum." And, promptly became the proud digger of a 1855o Seated Half Dol.
It just so happens that it is my first Seated half. I also would like to know the tale it could tell as this particular site, with but a few exceptions, is not kind to silver and coins in general. She is pictured just as she came out of the ground. Will give it a gentle water rinsing and that will be it for cleaning.
Anyway, wanted to share this find with you all. There are still some goodies left out there. HH jim tn
