Going stir crazy not being able to hunt since my surgery.........thought I would see how long I would be able to go hunting at a school yard before having to quit.
This was a spur of the moment decision to head out. Wife didn't think it was a good idea, just had to see for myself. Well, lasted about 2 1/2 hours, being careful not to do too many ups and downs.
Headed off to the schoolyard I more or less cleaned out with numerous detectors for almost 2 years. Haven't been back there since we moved last year August.
The detector I took was the DeepTech Vista Gold, no others came along, didn't want to be tempted in trying another detector. This is one way to be forced in learning how
one particular detector works and performs.
The Gold is a potent powerhouse of a dig and beep machine. So I was careful not to over power the settings....Had the 6x8 DD coil on it to help tame its depth capabilities.
Most items at this school are never more than 6", so the larger coil was not warranted to use.
Hunted for the most part in two tone all metal mode, then switching to single tone to help in pinpointing. Ground balancing was a piece of cake, it ran so smooth at at 75%
sensitivity it was almost silent. At 50% was silent. For the first hour dug most low and high signals just to see what it could find. It sees a lot of targets giving off the low iron tone,
dug many and they were iron, many were deeper than I would want to dig here. High tones were a mixed batch of good and trash targets, it has no problems seeing very small foil at
depth. It got to the point to try hunting in disc mode, cranked up the disc control just to knock out some of that small foil. The Gold runs quiet, I mean quiet in this mode, at times didn't think it was even on. Every now and then a target signal would break the silence, a mixed bag of junk and good stuff.
Looks like I did leave a few good targets last year. A Loonie, some quarters, dimes, nickel, pennies, earring and a small 2" length of a sterling silver chain.
Had a great hunt really getting to know this detector, I can see it has some real potential. But, a really boring machine, no bells and whistles to tinker with constantly.
Just set it up and go hunt... boring in a good way, no distractions.
