finally comfortable huting outside auto sensitivity

A couple hunts ago, I decided I was finally familiar enough with my gt to step out of auto. In the dry sand to damp sand through wet sand on the slope I've found I can hunt with sens at about 10-11 o'clock. In the wet to water I have to drop to 12-1 o'clock. I purchased a Ron's 180 meter (very nice build!), but forgot to bring a small enough screwdriver to calibrate it. I was unable to find any decent spots that weren't already gridded, so I decided to just take seconds on a spot. I took the meter off so I could get down into the water if need be. With a constant drizzle and stong winds, I was only able to get in about 20 minutes of hunting before it was too damp and cold for me (gloves have no thumb or index finger tips, and no long johns on). I was able to pull quarters and nickles from a spot that had been hunted earlier in the day, that's a great feeling! It is a world of difference outside of auto! Sometimes when I am lazy I just carry my scoop, but from now I will have to shoulder it when I'm not gridding or otherwise drag it.

all part of the learning curve.... sounds like you are getting the hang of it ...... dont get the control box or meter wet...... you will know you have a good signal set up as the targets start getting deeper..... happy huntin

Congrats on moving to the next level of exploration.... I used auto for a short time - I figured I was going to have to learn how to make adjustments eventually; no better time than now. Although I do put it into auto to double-check my targets too, just to see. Still, it sounds like in a short time, you have learned a lot.
