The HCBM is a Chinese knock off of the Fisher 1280 Aquanaut. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then that speaks volumes.

I doubt, though, that it is as rugged or reliable as the venerable Aquanaut. When you consider that they are giving it away with a $250 detector, well... that might tell you something. But making detectors that work 'aint all that hard, nowadays, especially when you have plenty of examples to reverse engineer. Sooo, I'm pretty sure it works, but I wouldn't expect too much from it... nor for very long.

But, hey - it beats a hot poker in the eye. After all, people do manage with similar knock-off quality detectors. And what the hell - you did get it for free (sorta)! SO you may as well give it a shot.
Who knows, you might get lucky and find something of real value with it. Then you can sell THAT and buy a better water detector.

As for the ACE, there 'aint nuttin I can say that hasn't already been said. You done alright there.

Keep the viper in the box and sell it and buy a second ACE! it's good to have two, for friends, family, or the home owner who let you detect his property. I always offer the property owner a chance to detect with me, and it is nice to let them use the second one. Or a back up if one ever goes down.

I would say that is about the best use for such things.
