Finally got out with the Deepstar again...

Boy, it's been a busy few months, and added on to that the conditions here (CA) for detecting the beaches have been less than favorable. Regardless, I knew the conditions would be poor, but I haven't been out for so long that I decided I'd go this morning and get some ocean breeze
I brought a shovel with me this time since I've been breaking my back digging with a sand scoop. I walked a length of beach without any targets except a shred of aluminum and a hairpin. As I turned around to walk back I got a signal that sounded good. It wasn't terribly loud, but repeatable and came out at me as a target. I dug a few scoops, expecting a nail or something about 10 inches down. At about 12" I could still hear the target, about 15" I had a bigger hole and the target was still straight down. 4 or 5 more scoops and I was down about 22" and the target was still down there. Finally, at about 23 or 24" down I finally pulled a scoop out and checked the hole again. Nothing. Cool! I swept over my last shovel full of sand and bang! There was something there. I pulled my sandscoop off my belt and took a scoop and out came a nickel. Wow, big find, huh? Well, considering it was the first non-trash target of the morning, and it was down a solid 23+ inches I was pretty happy. A few more steps and I started hitting pennies, but they were all on the surface, as if someone had sprinkled them there for me
Well, anyway, nothing old, nothing gold, but I think this is the deepest nickel I've ever found and it surprised the heck out of me. I had the Deepstar turned down (one click off max reject, threshold at about 1/4 range) since I was getting hammered by black/mineralized sand.
Eric, do you sell backhoes with the Deepstar?
The weather here is beginning to get rainy and there's some big tides and waves coming, so I'm hoping for the best, but it's a waiting game.
Happy hunting...

Hi Jeff,
Must be one of those situations where the beach conductivity was enhancing the signal. I bet that if you air tested that nickel that you would not get 23in, particularly with the threshold turned down. Keep us informed of other deep finds on that beach.
I normally supply a free backhoe with each Deepstar but the freight costs to the US are prohibitive
Eric.

I was totally surprised at how deep it was too. I was very careful because I knew the target was downthere and I was watching the sides of the hole to make sure it wasn't falling in from the sides.
I'll try an air test but as I remember from doing it before it was no where near that far from the coil
None the less, it was a fun dig and I'm sure glad I had the shovel with me!
I'm going to try to hit the beach in another day or so and try again, hopefully we'll see some beach erosion...
