I found my Bonanza Cache many years ago. A fellow contacted me and asked if I could find a money cache he had buried and thought it was now gone. He thought his neighbor had saw him bury it and had dug it up and stolen it. I told him a detector would not detect paper money, so unless the container had metal in it, nothing could be done. (Maybe if I had the one advertisement Uncle Willy has?) He then said it was buried in a Mason jar with a metal lid and ring on it. Glory be, I thought!!!
I then borrowed a lid and ring and checked out the way it sounded. You're right - shows as "iron" on my old 6000 DI!
To make a long story short, about 50 ft from where he THOUGHT it was, the tector went BEEP!!!!!
After digging it up, he let me follow him into his workshop where he proceeded to count the contents IN FRONT OF ME!!!!!!
There was, if I counted right myself as he counted, 176 One Hundred Dollar bills in a big roll. He had been saving that for over 20 years when he decided to bury it.
My reward?? 10 of those bills. My wife used it to buy a set of tires for our '72 Ford Gran Torino and also a new TV.
No, it's not still there - he decided to put it in the bank. Due to our agreement, even today this is about all I'm allowed to say about it.
What's my point?? The new detectors are "self defeating" to us! Any detector worth it's salt will discriminate out "iron" as we all usually choose to hunt with that notched out. This means that any Mason Jar crammed full of money will be overlooked. Any iron strongbox maybe full of gold coins will be overlooked. That strongbox would probably be detected at up to 4 or 5 FOOT if only we would choose to open the iron notch!!!!!!!
Yup, I'm guilty too. I usually use coin or jewelry mode. Who knows how much I've failed to detect just cause I'm too lazy to DIG IT ALL??????
I've found items worth more than the reward I got back then, but the TOTAL amount found has not yet been beat!
You can choose to believe this or not believe. Doesn't make any difference to me. What you need to keep in mind is all we are missing by using that notch feature most tectors now have.
