yes i know it is not a ghost town but who left the coins so long ago. that the find is a taxable event under a 1969 federal court ruling that held a "treasure trove" is taxable the year it was discovered.

Fortunately, the government says they do not show up as stolen from the mint.
Still, these people should have shut their mouths. I'd NEVER brag about finding
a hoard like that. Not on your life.

Agree, they were fools to have ever told the first person. They should just have sold them one, two at a time. Now the IRS will be waiting with there hand out, the state, and God only knows what other endless red tap they will hit, likely ending up with near nothing. I have never and would never report any such find to anyone.
