I would appreciate some help in identifying the latch a button found in a pasture that was a pre-civil war home site. The button and latch cover (?) are about 1 to 1.5 inches in size. The button has a red stone in it. any help is appreciated.

I'm going to guess the latch is from the 19th Century because they were proud of their patents back then. I'm pretty sure the button is a 1920s/1930s Art Deco. The missing back means it was rusted away steel from well into the 20th Century.
