About 4 inches down in very dense clay....which made me hope I'd find more along the line...all the iron tones I dug were in fact iron, but I dug my share to make sure I wasn't missing anything deep. I remember the reading being something other than iron (I had it in All Metal mode and was just disc'ng out via tone and ID), but couldn't tell you the number now. The funny part is that the owner I was originally on had a guest come over from 2 houses down and said, "Well there's a trench on my property, come on over and hunt it anytime..." and walked away like it was nothing. I love people like that
