First CW relic hunt of New Year w/ Omega, but...

Got the new year off to a great start with a trip south to visit my folks and get in some relic hunting with my dad. He just got a Garrett ACE 350 for Christmas and he and I hit the CW picket post we found this past Nov. We had a good hunt with the highlight being a portion of the trigger guard off of an Enfield rifle. I was using my Omega 8000 and it did good , but...I have made my decision. I am getting rid of the Omega and buying a G2. 90% of my detecting is CW relics and I have found the Omega to be strong on coins ,especially silver, but not very good on lower conductors. Therefore after MUCH thought between the Garrett AT Pro and the G2...I have decided the G2 will be the new machine for me. I will keep my Tesoro Vaquero for the wide open deep seeking pasture sites, and the G2 for woods and trashy areas.

Great Digs!! What coil are you using on the Omega and what was the response on those 3 ringers? I've thought of a Omega for the less trashy spots as a 2nd machine to my G2............MO

I am using the stock 10" elliptical coil. If you are looking at the Omega as a coin machine then a great choice, but for relics , I think your G2 is going to far outshine it. The minie's "normally" read about 77-80 down to about 4"...below that I have seen them up average considerably (as high as 92) and one time a 9" deep 58 cal minie was barely an audible signal and was 99. My issue with Omega is that lower conductive targets (smaller bullets and brass items) dont hit very strong, Numbers jump ALOT and depth seems to top out at about 6"...and this is with sens at 95 and disc at 16. Many times this weekend I would get a solid signal (50-60 range), dig a plug and the signal be completely GONE...now I am not talking hole masking here. The target was usually in the plug , only about 2-3" from the coil and the Omega now could no longer see it. These targets were usually shotgun shell hulls. I would tear the plug apart and locate the target with my pinpointer. I do not understand why this happens at all. but have experienced many many times this past year.

I'm puzzled by your Omega not being good at finding low conductors. I've dug hundreds of three ringers at very good depths with mine using the 11" coil. And I can rarely get my sensitivity over 60. I've got the Gold Bug SE and I hate to say it, but the Omega eats it for lunch, at least for me.

Nice bunch of saves. I was a little surprised to see your comments as well on the Omega not being so good on low conductors. I am not a big relic hunter, but have dug numerous buttons and bullets with the Omega and 11" coil and a few with the 10" coil, too. Good luck in your future hunts. HH jim tn
