Finally got out with the new coils and for the guys who asked for a rookie field test report, here it is. Started down to visit my TH buddy Colby on late Saturday morning to do some scouting. He drove me through 100 miles of back roads and got me completely lost some where near Schoharie, NY. We got permission to hunt a field on a high plateau over looking the valley. I put on the new WOT and not to long after got a promising signal. Put the shovel in the ground and bam 3 inches down was frost so hard you would need a jackhammer to get through it. Bummed out about rushing out to early we just hunted for shallow targets. We walked away skunked about 3 hours later. Not one to be discouraged Colby suggested that we drop down in elevation and go to the old honey hole that we have pounded to death but seems to keep putting up coins and buttons. So Sunday morning we waited for it to warm up a bit and gave it a shot. After about an hour I got a good sound mixed in with some iron. It kept working through the iron signal, I had a little trouble separating the two target on pinpoint with the big coil but I thought I was close so I dug it. The frost was not bad here 4 to 5 inches down and about 4 inches thick. You could get through it with a little work. I popped the the plug out and dropped in the X-1 and got a solid iron hit about 10 inches down. On the side of the hole was a solid copper sound. I had missed the pinpoint by about 5 inches. It pinpointed right between the two targets. I made another cut and out pops an 1837 hard times token. The second one of these from this farm. My shovel had missed it by a half inch on the first try. Like I always say "If you can't be good be lucky". I continued with the WOT for a few more hours and dug some 1800's junk but it got easier to pinpoint and separate targets with a little practice. So I switched coils to the Platypus and worked the same area. I found it was comparable to the stock coil. The signals seemed to be more crisp on the deeper targets than the stock coil. I dug two flat buttons in the afternoon one was on some rusty metal but I could hear the good signal fighting its way through the iron signal. I must say I am impressed with both coils.
The WOT: Positives, Great Depth, You can cover a lot of ground, solid crisp signals, hunted under high tension power lines no problem, not as heavy as I thought it would be.
The WOT: Negatives, Tough pinpointing on double targets, Its big some times 3 to 4 targets under the coil at once(tough to separate them)
The Platypus: Positives, Light weight, Excellent pinpointing, Great depth, really good sounds on deep targets, works great in the woods(you can get it in tight spots), great target separation on multiple targets.
The Platypus: Negatives, I couldn't find any negatives I love this coil.
I ran both coils with Charles rock solid set up with sensitivity 18-21, to much mineralization to run in the high 20's at this spot.
MY finds for the day, 1837 Hard times token, 2 buttons, 1 3" ingot(think its tin)
Colbys finds, 1 unidentifiable coin/button, 4 buttons, 1 croatal bell
The last pic is a croatal bell my buddy found, the pic came out good so I threw it in. It was stuck in the frost and he took 20 minutes working it out on the hope it would be whole, but no such luck it was broke in half and we couldn't find the other half.
The season has begun in the North
Good luck and thanks for reading. HH Arron
