First day with F4 a beginners perspective

Coinstar

New member
A friend and I hit our local park. He had a Whites MXT and I used a Fisher F4 with the 11" DD coil. This is my big haul. Nothing that spectacular. The big coin shown is a Chuck E Cheese token!
The only complaint I have is, even with the sensitivity at 2 I was still sometimes digging 8" for the coin. In one case I dug almost a 1' and found a piece of old barbed wire. I'm thinking it was because the ground was very soft due to a lot of rain in the last few weeks. Another thing that happened a few times, is when I sweep a certain spot the machine just goes nuts. jumping all over the place, even when I move the coil away. The ID was accurate to a degree. When I hit a solid dime signal. It was a dime. When I hit a solid zinc signal it was a penny. Pull tabs registered all over the place as did screw caps. Several times the id moved between 25c and 50c. In every case it was a screw cap. I am wondering why there is a "SC" notch when the screw caps rarely hit there. Spending time in the park really helped me learn the pinpointing. When my friend and I compared pinpointing, the F4 was spot on with the MXT every time using the same target. I had Iron 1 and 2 notched out on the F4. Several times when the F4 was bouncing around the 70 to 90 range the MXT was id'ing a lot lower and indicated iron as the target. When we dug it up, it was a rusty piece of barbed wire. One thing that impressed me is how small some of the targets were. I dug up a piece of pull tab that was about the size of a piece of a half a piece of rice at about 4". I may be going to a local high school tomorrow, I'll post my finds if I do :)

You are off to a good start, you will have that F4 smoking in no time!!!!......hh rick in mi.

I run my F4 the same way, just iron discriminated out. When you get one of those bouncy signals (that your friend's MXT said was iron" try flipping over to no discrimination, sometimes it will then show clearly as iron.

Bottle caps are a problem with the 11In DD coil. Eventually you will know before you dig if its a bottle cap or not, try some of the techniques described here: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?37,1386682

Question for you, are you using manual GB before you start swinging? Remember you can manual GB in Auto-tune mode, then switch to discrimination and the setting is saved. I find my ID to be less jumpy if I have properly ground balanced. I manually GB every time I turn the machine on.

Continued good luck,
Boston

Yep, I ground balance before I start. I may not be perfect yet at getting the GB right. I tried the method in the thread. I am getting better passing up iron. I need to remember to try the bottle cap trick. I get solid quarter signals that, sure enough, are bottle caps.

you will find that when iron breaks down and rusts your detector will have problems IDing the object. with practice you will see the signal, disregard it, and move on. i agree with BOSTON METAL.
