First hunt in quite a few days. I was having withdrawals!

[attachment 58885 coins2.jpg]I went to a football field for a few hours on Saturday and hunted the sideline and part of an end zone. GEEZ!...I was finding clad at 6"+ so I knew the silver was going to be deep. After getting some of the clad out of the way which was masking the older stuff...the wheaties started to come at 6" to 8". I found 6 wheaties....the oldest being 1920. I then found a silver 1946 Roosy at 8"....by then it was dark so I had to leave. I just knew once the wheaties started popping out...that a silver surely would...so I stayed until I found one!
I ran the SE in semi auto sensitivity of 26 and the gain up to 9. My SE seems very stable and sounds good at this setting...rather than at manual sensitivity and lower gain. My settings are probably a trade off but it's just my preference and my SE is much more stable at those settings. I was also using the 10" x 14" excelerator because my SE stock coil is just not as stable. I did use manual sens at times and dropped the gain down to 6 when I did...but I ended up back at auto 26 and higher gain...just my personal preference.
The best part was that I dug ONLY 6 stinkin' Lincolns that fooled me and sounded like a dime. This is the best I have done at dimes vs. pennies ratio. 21 dimes and only 6 lincolns. I learned a lot on this hunt. The wheaties sounded like wheaties and I knew they were pennies. The last 2 hours of the hunt...I did not even look at the screen and cursor. I relied on sound only and really honed on in on the dime sound and didn't even need the screen...I just knew the target was a dime by sound alone. I even found my first 50 cent piece of the year. I had my hopes up for a silver quarter as it looked to be 7"+ deep on the SE depth meter...but oh well. It was a pretty fun hunt.
21 dimes...10 quarters...6 wheaties...2 nickels...1 silver dime...6 junker lincolns...1 50 cent piece

it will false and chirp over iron targets. Even in AM I got high pitched sure coin sound hits...but the cursor would bounce upper left???On other occasions...I would then get the same nice fluty high tone and perfect cursor placement...then dig up a nail!??
I went back over to conductive sounds running lower sensitivity...but a higher gain setting and have been very pleased since doing so. If I hit a good target...the sound stops me in my tracks...even through a slight null. With a lower sensitivity setting though...I don't get much nulling. It's all personal preference because I know many on the forum recommend using ferrous and are very successful at it. I tried it for 3 months and did find some nice items...but I just prefer conductive sounds. Most times now...I don't even look at the screen. If I get the sound I'm looking for...I dig. Each person has there own likes and dislikes. Don't get me wrong...I can still switch to ferrous/AM and feel right at home. My personal preference though is conductive with IM at 18 to 20.
I think you are right about the stock SE coil. I use either the excelerator 4 x 7 or the 10 x 14 as they are both more stable than my stock coil.

I wonder if the stock coil that comes with the SE is too sensitive if my Explorer XS 10" coil will be good for it?

I hope it comes today.

Bryce ,I learned the same way at a school yard the more clad I dug the better I got at learning what I wanted to dig.It also pays for gas,and we know that gas in IL is cheap.Good luck and happy hunting

I didn't have enough time to check it out in the field seeing as how I had to go to my daughter's baseball game, then eat dinner then mow the lawn.

But I did an air test and am amazed at how high the stock coil can get and still hit on a quarter. I realize air tests prove nothing on the Explorers but I just had to check. I'd have been p o'd it it only aired a couple inches. It was over a foot.

I'm hoping it will do just fine on in-ground tests.

I'll have to see how your settings do. Thanks for the heads up!

and make sure you try numerous settings over some type of test garden. I think the coil differs on a lot of the SE's as mine doesn't suit me with the stock coil at many locations. It's VERY sensitive and can be a coin killer....IF you can get your machine stable. I just have better luck with stability running a different coil. Since you like running All metal...hopefully you can get a setting you like and the SE cooperates for you. For whatever reason...my SE just functions better in conductive and auto sens. On deep targets the sound isn't as solid as when using manual...but the higher gain of 8 to 9 definately brings out the tone and I know it's a digable target. I hated it at first but I gave it some time and got used to it. Now when I run manual it just seems so much more jumpy and chirpy. I drop it down some and it settles down...but then I also drop the gain down and don't like that sound either...so back to auto and higher gain I have been going.
Your preferences may be totally different and you may like the AM/Ferrous/lower gain setting. There are just so many options so I know you'll find settings that you like.
I am going to an area thats not loaded with iron in a week or so and there...I'm sure I can run manual sens at 24 or so...maybe 23 and have a pretty stable machine. I have hunted many years as I'm sure you have and the SE just seems to need some tweeking at each site I go to. I can rarely hunt different sites with the same settings. Nothing major...but lower gain vs higher.....manual vs auto...etc.
There's tons of AM/ferrous experts on the forum who can give some great tips. Experiment with all the tips you get and I know you'll find the settings that make your new SE really click. Heck you may even have a stable stock coil on your new SE. If so.....then you can run pretty much whatever settings you prefer and may not get a lot of falsing or chirping.
