First hunt with detech 13 ultimate

OBX Franz

New member
I bought a second hand 13 ult. recently. Yesterday I epoxied around the coil nut and sealed it beneath the cable strain relief nut with RTV. I took it out this evening for a trial run, and I was pretty happy. It feels lighter than the 10" tornado (not sure if I'm just imagining this) and seems to get a little more coverage at the same sensitivity level. Signals are nice and clear as well. I had almost zero falsing. I did dig (or not dig) a couple disappearing signals. And they aren't the "one more scoop" kind the GT is known for. I have had this happen with the s-12 too, so I'm guessing it is possibly a characteristc of larger coils. Some will be moderate strength signals before scooping. Then weak in the hole. Dump the second scoop and the pile has an even weaker signal (or sometimes no signal). But nothing found. Other times the signal just disappears completely. I'm guessing it could be super small trash as well. It's hard to make a fair call on its' drag in the water as the times I went into the h20 I was hunting in the wash w/ some pretty strong water movement. Pinpointing isn't as easy as it is with the t10 and s12; it seems harder to center the signal when circling in or x-ing in on the target. That said, no targets were further than half a scoop outside of where I thought they were.

:detecting:Lighter feel is always a good thing isnt it Franz

Your disappearing signals can be a target, say a coin, turning on its side or dropping even further down the hole(this happens alot at the ocean in soft sand).

Good luck with your new coil!

I have had a few of those disappearing signals. Most of the time I find a coin real deep in the bottom of the hole that I just dug. I always take another scoop or two out of the hole if the signal seems to disappear. Most of the time I find the coin in the last scoop.

I've dug a lot of 180 signals-probably, small iron, and once you move them from the original spot, the sovereign ignores the iteml Good hunting-Mark

The first few times I used my Explorer at the beach I went nutz chasing disappearing signals. Eventually I figured out my prey was sliding below detecting range. That and using a bigger scoop made a world of difference.

Max, yep...I thought the loaner I had was an excellent coil when away from strong EMI sources, but one thing I found is that when I marked some targets with the Ultimate via poker chips, and then swapped to the 12x10 later to compare those deepish signals, the 12x10 would tell me some of them were obvious coin falses from iron. I would dig them just to be sure though and always the 12x10 knew what was up.

Maybe for me it was just not being as used to the Ultimate's language and traits as the 12x10, but even if the Ultimate was more prone to being easier to "get fooled" on coin hits from iron, in a way that might be a good thing when after fringe depth stuff. Might be easier to convince the machine and say "coin" for some stuff at the outer fringes, maybe...

But like you said probably iron. What I suspect is he might be hitting some small iron that once disturbed fluffs into nothingness and then not even a null is heard in the disturbed sand. Could be though a deep coin like George said. These Minelabs sometimes get confused on sweeping over a hole and end up ignoring a deep target with the disturbance of the ground signal, or like Neil said a coin flipped on edge. Seen that happen too, and not just with the Ultimate.

OBX, you are not imagining the lighter weight than the 10" Tornado. Both the Ultimate, S-12, and 12x10 (without a coil cover) are all right around the same weight and a good bit lighter than the 10" Tornado. One the first page of the coil sticky near the bottom is a thread link to a coil weight chart where these numbers can be seen in various with and without a coil cover configurations.

The S-12 felt heavier to me than the weight indicated, and I would guess due to it's more towards the back mounting point. Even though the 12x10 and Ultimate are very near each other in weight (without using a coil cover on the 12x10), and even though the 12x10 is a pretty light coil, the Ultimate feels even more light on the shaft. Only thing I can figure is the Ultimate's round shape more evenly distributing it's weight around the shaft, or perhaps just the sight of seeing such a huge coil on the end of the shaft and yet not feeling what you suspect. Great feeling coil for covering large vast areas faster. That's why I want one to use on certain days. Much more "right" feeling for areas like that to me than the 15x12.

I found the Ultimate pretty well behaved at one very mineralized beach I hunt and at my mineralized land sites, but required somewhat lower sensitivity settings than the 12x10 the same day/same site, and still wasn't quite as stable as the 12x10 with less nulling and such. Still, for it's size, I was very happy with the Ultimate's behavior in a round DD coil of that size.

Thanks for sharing your field report on this coil. Love reading this sort of stuff...

PS- That Ultimate has one garbage coil cover on it. Never saw something so flimsy, and with huge gaps at the edges that suck sand or dirt right into them. Might be you were getting sand sucked in and out of the coil cover as you swept in the water, or if on the beach water/sand sloshing around in there too. No big deal to me, as I hate coil covers and plan to use 4 or 5 coats of spray on bed liner on the bottom/sides like I do all my coils to avoid that and also to drop a bit more weight. With the Ultimate I'm going to paint the top too with the stuff, because I hate that white color. I hear the also come in black now too though.

I've put the 13" through a lot more use since my original post. Only had a few disappearing targets - starting to think they're just really really small junk targets. I can say for sure, it does have more drag in the water than the tornado or s12. It is more effected by EMI than the tornado, but I'm rarely near any when I hunt. And like you said critter, the coil cover is flimsy and fits loosely. One interesting thing I have noticed is that I can hear both the iron and lead on jigheads. I never dug one of them in disc. with the tornado unless the hook was almost rusted away. I can only assume the iron hook nulled out the signal with the tornado. No matter, it definitely reacts differently. At first the white coil was strange, but it makes pinpointing (which I've gotten used to with it now) in the water much easier. High tide in the trash zone is NOT where it belongs (it was fun trying to squeeze targets out of the trash!), but I guess that goes without saying for any larger coil.
