First Hunt with Quattro...anything I should know?

JoshuaA

New member
Just went for my first hunt with a Quattro I picked up a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. Was only able to hunt for about 15 minutes and came up with a few fish hooks, lead weights, pull tab and a small metal star. Please share any helpful info. I think I'm going to like this machine :)

Have you made a test garden with objects of known depth and location to practice. Have you tried to verify signal in coins jewelry by switching to all metal. If both sounds are high dig. Nails Usually have a low sound in all metal. A nail is usually a lot deeper than the depth gauge indicates. If the depth reads on surface and my probe doesn't locate it I don't dig. I always use high trash unless all sweeps are quiet. The quattro will go deep and that can also be a curse. In trashy areas I manually lower the sens until it quits making so many false signals (as low as 4). This looses depth but will find coins. Normally I use 11or 12 sens.

Thanks! I have only done some air tests. I will try the different modes to see how things run up.

I own a Quattro too, it is really good machine. The slower you swing the coil the better. For the really trashy area I would suggest purchasing a smaller coil. You would not believe how many coins I found with my smaller coil that I missed with the larger coil. Also I would suggest purchasing a 11 inch pro coil, it is better then the original that the Quattro came with. You can find the information about the coils here http://www.findmall.com/read.php?19,1055627. I think the most important thing to do on the Quattro is to noise cancel. I noise cancel before I start to hunt, when moving to a new area, and when I make adjustments to the detector. I always noise cancel with the coil on the ground. I would also suggest buying Andy Sabisch's Quattro/Safari handbook, It has a lot of good information it.

John, thank you!! I have the small coil and am half way through the book :) thanks for the pointers!!

Have you gotten a chance to get out with the Quattro. it is raining pretty good today, don't use the Quattro in the rain. I especially like the Quattro in areas without a lot of trash. That is when the depth can be appreciated. In those areas I run with high trash and all metal. Don't think I miss much that way. The readout is not effected all that much. I find nickels may read 13 or 14 instead of 14 or 15 with ferris vs conductive sounds. The important thing anyway is the repeatability of the signal.

I think in order to get the most out of a site it needs to be hunted several times at different angles with different settings, coils or machines. The first time through cherry picking coins.

Go back through digging all good hits at 90 degrees, looking for gold rings ,and digging pull tabs .

The third or subsequent time through with a lot of the trash removed, a larger deeper search for the good stuff that you went right over the top of.

I especially like going out early with dew on the grass to help mark my passes. I am sure when I research at 90 degrees some of my finds are from areas in between earlier passes when I wandered to much. I have thought about laying a string to mark a row and moving it as I go. Gps is not accurate enough.

Let us know how you are doing! I am learning every time I go out. Perhaps you have learned something to help me.

Hotzone....thanks for the info! I have not been out with it in about a week or so. Hope to get out again Thursday of this week if the weather permits...I will post how I do and what I find.
