First Indians today

Had to tell you all. They tore up main street today in my town Austin MN. They busted up the concrete yesterday and removed it today. I detected while they were removing the concrete because I new the contractor. 5 minutes in I found a 1899 Indian in pretty good shape. An hour later found another...not so good but could read the date...1874. Went back later and there were two other guys detecting. They had found two indians and a 2 cent piece but dates were not readable at the time. Never got to that side of the street earlier. I also found a 1911 wheat. After I cleaned it I couldn't read the date anymore. Also found an old bullet cartridge. It had either a C or an O and an F marking also had an 11 on one side of the botton and an 84 on the other side...2 1/8th inch long and 5/8th diameter. Also found what I think is a silver stamped round disk which was pretty thin whith a couple couple oakleaf clusters on it. I think it might have come off a horse saddle. Will post pics soon. Awesome day for me. Can't wait till they do the next block. Hope to find some silver or better next block. Wish me luck!!!

Wow that was a great hunt Kim and I hope the next street holds the holy grail a gold coin and if not then the silver your wishing for.

Congrats on the finds. Keep your eyes on those next few blocks. And make every attempt to "beat" those other guys to the punch. You have to know that they are thinking the same thing about getting there ahead of you! One thing I might recommend is that, if you are the first to arrive at the site, "mark your turf", slow down your hunt and take your time. There seems to be an "unwritten" rule around here that fellow detectorists won't jump in ahead of someone else who is detecting a specific piece of turf. Hope that rule holds up for you in Austin and you get a pocketful of coins. HH Randy
 
Thanks, I hope so too Randy. I went back to do the other side of the street but they were already on that side so I just reworked the side I was on the in the afternoon. They had already done that side and didn't find anything (made me feel kinda good) so I worked the vertical 1' drop next to the sidewalk being careful not to undermine the sidewalk and thats where I got the third indian. Had a very nice chat with them when it started to get dark are we were done. Very nice fellows that have been detecting for years. Interesting that they had heard about pin pointers but had never used one. After I demonstrated the pro pointer they agreed it would speed up target recovery. By the way, how far are you from Austin, MN and would you be interested in helping me search a couple pretty old farm sites, not 1800's but early 1900's I also have permission to search a pretty old school that is just barely still standing. It would be this fall sometime after all the foliage browns up.

The old farmsites and school grounds sound promising. Unfortunately, with 8 miles between me and the Missouri border, I'm about as far from the Minnesota line as you can get and still be in Iowa. If the offer stands and I ever make it up that way, I'd be happy to go detecting with you. Thanks! HH Randy
