Hey all, Just received my Safari. Really looking forward to getting out and learning what it is telling me. It has been snowing quiet a bit this week, but might be able to get out to a few sleding hills. I have been hunting since about 2000. My weapon of choice as been the Tesoro. At one point I owned six of them. The Safari will be my first with a screen. I like the fact that it has different tones and thats how I am planning on learning the safari.
Anyways the question I have is on a small coil that I will be buying in the near future. I have browsed thru some old post on coils and I am looking at a few different ones. 8 inch butterfly. 6x8 sef. Is that actually the same coil or are they different? Also looking into the excellerator and the sunray coils. I know everone has their own opinion and would love to hear yours. I live in Eastern WA. This is more of a desert as far a the land goes. I will be detecting mainly houses from the 30's and forty's.
Thanks for your input.

http://www.findmall.com/read.php?19,1055627 info on coils .. tesoro is still a good weapon of choice

I have the 6x8 SEF and in all honesty, it is not a whole lot better than the stock coil. The whole key to sniffing out goodies in high trash areas is to go SLOW. I know we all like to floor it and hit as much ground as we can, and I was that way myself, but when I followed some advice and went slow, I was amazed at how many good targets I was passing up by being in a hurry. Smaller coils definitly have their advantages and I do really like my 6x8 but I have been amazed by the stock coil as well. People say not to rely on the VDI but in trashy areas, when going slowly, I keep an eye on the screen because you might have a good number pop up on the screen that your ears didn't catch and you will pass it up. Clad money and silver are extremely hard to differentiate with only your ears. If I see a good number pop up, I will stop and investigate the hit from many angles and usually dig it if I am in doubt. I have found lots of goodies by learning patience. The Safari is a great machine and if there is metal in the ground, it will tell you. I have an Etrac as well and the only difference that really makes a difference between the two machines is the Etrac discriminates better. The processor in the ETrac is by no means fast and neither os the Safaris, so slowwww, painfully slowww, is the key. You are going to love your new Safari. When you hit a place thats been beat to death and still find good targets, it makes detecting all brand new again. HH

I experienced what SS is talking about just yesterday. Went back to a hammered school, and SLOWED DOWN to a crawl. Rewarded with a 52D quarter. But that excited me so much, I speeded up again and only found clad the rest of the afternoon.

I like my 6x8SEF but only use it in really hi trash or when theres a lot of above ground debris or plants. I'd say I use the stock coil 90% of the time.

Where I hunt which is older homes I run into moderate trash nothing to crazy but there are those times that it is crazy. And im here to tell you that all though the stock coil is pretty great that 6X8 SEF is pretty devastating in hard to hunt ground. It is extremely stable can be run with more sensitivity in my ground and pin points like a dream. As far as depth goes most my soil is clay after seven inches so rare to come across deeper then seven inch targets and I have had zero problem hitting those coins with the SEF. One thing I wil say is the TID for me was off a digit ie(dime 37 not 3:geek: but tone stayed identical.

I ordered a 6x8 sef on Saturday and waiting patiently. Definitely looking forward to using and helping a bit with my pinpointing. That is basically all I hunt to is older houses too. Dime is 37 for me
