First Month with F5

RLOH

Well-known member
I recently traded for a F5 with the 11 inch dd coil and after about 18 hours of detecting, I am in love with this detector. It has been very hot and dry with ground like concrete so I have been detecting much less then usual. I am not new to the F5, but I never gave my previous one a fair shake. I bought my first one as a clad hunter and never really tried it at my places where I find older coins. I have used this one at all of my spots and boy am I pleased. I have found both deep coins and masked coins in places that I believed were void of anything good. I have found 10 silver coins at depths up to 9 inches and three Indian heads in some of the trashiest spots I have ever hunted. Last Sunday I found the oldest coin I have ever found in my favorite park and it was where I have hunted dozens of times. In these previous hunts, I have not even found a wheat penny. There are three or four targets evey foot or so. I could not use the pinpoint button because of the density of this trash. Using the big coil was a challenge, but by barely creeping the coil, found this 1875 Indian head between a square tab and pull tab. I will be buying a small coil for this detector as asap. I hunt several places where the FeO meter constantly shows three bars and the detector ground balances around 90. I am amazed at the depth I am getting here. I always try to run my threshold as close to zero as I can and where possible the gain around 85. In some places I have had the gain at 55 and still find myself digging 6 inch deep coins. I also use three tones with the disc set at 15. I hardly ever dig rusty iron and if I do, I usually find a good target close by. This detector is the real "sleeper" in the Fisher lineup. I prefer the controls of the F5 way better than it's cousin the Omega. I have found the performance to be nearly identical between these two fine detectors.

So basically the F series detectors are pretty good at this finding metal stuff...deep and between other metals too.
Preaching to the choir here.
Welcome back to Fisherland...kinda like Disneyland because sometimes what they do seems fantastical...but it's not.

RLOH, that's why I'm keeping my f5, I've had mine for 2 1/2 years now, I bought it used from my brother WV62. I also use the 11" DD coil and it does a good job both covering ground and separating targets. DFMIKE also here on the forum has one and he seems to like his ok. I found my sensitively setting to work best at 70 on my machine, it actually runs deeper than any other setting. I'm mainly a silver hunter and this f5 seems to also be a silver hunter.

I do like mine a lot. This detector really combines performance and one of the best visual layout I have seen to date. Because I like to try stuff, I will surely try other detectors just for fun but I really can't see myself selling the F5... unless First Texas comes out with an updated version but I doubt it. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" as they say.

I don't have a F5 anymore, but the one I had and sold to my brother SL52 air tested better than any other detector I have ever had. I have seen the results of my brother using his F5 and it also does good in the ground, real world hunts. Just to add some fuel to the F5 he just got some new headphones so the silver hasn't got a chance of hiding from him. :detecting:

So does anybody know why the F5 is so good?

Even for the F5 and the 11" coil we have found that our silver count is going down so we are thinking the sites we have are getting pretty well cleaned out of silver. What is the thoughts on the F5 and a little 5"DD coil to help with with the masking?

The one I bought and sold my brother I only air tested it and worked up what I thought was the best settings and 2 test hunts, one with the 11"DD and the other with 10" concentric coil.

Why so good?
Sounds like the engineers got the relationships between the gain, thresh and programming just right, add in the raw power and everything seems to be hitting on all cylinders on this one.

The 5" DD sniper?
After using this one on my F70 in severe trash and unbelievably heavy iron infested sites and seeing how deep it can go and what it can do and unmask and find in extremely well hunted sites my opinion is this should not be considered just an accessory but a must have.
Just one stellar find in a challenging and difficult site in my mind makes the purchase worth it, I have many more than that including a few bucket listers I am crediting to this coil.

I liked the 5 x 10 inch coil for the F5. It is small enough to hunt in tight spots but big enough to walk out into the fields.

I also love my F5. I took delivery of the 5" coil on Sunday and headed to a little park that I knew would have lots of rubbish and in theory a few 1 and 2 dollar coins. 20 minutes later 2 x1 and 1 x 2 and a 1945 roo penny with a lovely green patina and I was a happy chappy. Now all I have to do is re hit a few spots after winning the lottery and getting the time. :D
