After 18" of snow and near zero temperatures , we have had a few days warmup in Virginia. Yesterday the mercury climes to 64. I have always loved to swing my detector after a deep snow melt or heavy rain. I have a area near my home that has produced a large quanity of early American relics. My hunting buddy and I have recovered approximately 100 69 cal.musket ball, a number of buttons and a cannon. Yes a cannon that measured about three inches long and was dated around 1760 to 1800. Because there was a lot of moisture in the ground I decided to hint the same area. About five minutes into the hunt I recovered a nother 69 cal. Musket ball. This ball was 12" deep. Over the next 45 minutes I recovered six additional balls. With the exception of one ball (recovered at 4") all the other balled were at the 11" to 13" death. I think this help proves that the more moisture in the ground the deeper your detector will detect.
