First post - Fisher 1265X

Well I just joined this forum after being a member of others for about a year. Today I've bought myself an older model Fisher 1265X which the previous owner just had refurbished from Fisher with a new coil. I'm used to my AT Pro and started with an ACE 350, but had the desire to play with some older technology for comparison. I'm not convinced about my Pro's capabilities. The depth is questionable. And in iron, it just goes haywire. I know you can 'listen' to the iron audio, but I think it's not penetrating to the good signals deep enough. So I figured I'd go old school and see what I can find. Been searching through the forum and reading about the other 1200 series models, but does anyone have a suggestion for the 2 disc settings for relics? I'm in a civil war area and pull bullets and the like from the sites I hit. Wouldn't want to tone those out. The guy I'm purchasing from told me to set Disc 1 to a lower number, and Disc 2 higher to see if the signal hits both. If not, it's probably junk, but if hits both, could be something good. Not having held it or tried it out, I'm just searching for advice at this point. Any suggestions welcome.

Congrats on the 1265x, and welcome to the forum.

Most people did run the disc as you said disc one low and disc 2 higher. But being you are a relic hunter I would suggest a little detail to that. You find out that the 1265x will lose detection depth with higher disc settings. So I think I would run disc 1 as low as it will go or as low as you can stand. I would adjust disc 2 up until you disc out the smallest bullet you want to hit on and then back off until you get a good solid hit on that bullet.

If disc 1 is hitting pretty hard on a target then disc 2 will more than likely hit the target as well. But if you are getting low weak target response in disc 1 when you toggle over to disc 2 it may not hit it because it is to deep.

A lot of folks didn't use disc 2 at all, they would set disc 1 just like I said about disc 2 and take off.

If you watch you can still buy some extra coils, I know they made a 11", 5", 3.75" and of course the stock 8".

Thanks Ron. I think this one comes with the 11 inch but not sure. I think it's the spider coil from the looks of it. I think I will bury a bullet in the back yard and do like you said. I rarely dig anything less than a bullet tone. I know gold and nickels would be lower signal wise but I haven't found gold yet and don't expect to in the middle of a field. The bullet should give me all the tones from lead to coins and silver. I'm more curious to find out tips the 1265x will find anything left behind by the AT Pro. Should be interesting. I know where things have been pulled from so I'm going to start there. I hit the area hard with a 15" NEL coil, so we will see. You never know till you try. That's why I love this hobby. I have yet to be skunked on this one site. Squeak out a bullet almost every outing. Better than nothing.

Ron gave you some good strong advice as always. I've used the 1265 since it came out and still use it with great success, fantastic in the water. ok the 1265 will do just about what you ask of it ,Relic, coins and rings. the 1265X found more rings a jewelry then any other detector I own besides my 555-D.
being your a relic hunter don't even bother with Disc 2, set DISC 1 @ 2-3 for nails, the small ones are the pain, and set the SEN. to MAX by pulling the knob out and rotating the knob clockwise and if she "SNAP, CRACKLES,POPS , back off easy till she's stable. She will go deep. Ron is correct in saying you'll LOSE depth the higher the DISC setting. Now if you want to use both DISC 1 & 2 with the toggle (which is awesome when coin shooting) use DISC1 @ 0 and Disc2 @ no more then 3 for small bits of iron and rust, remember brass and copper items are also good relic as so are some iron objects.Hope this helps, I have some other 1265X tip pages if you want them. Congrats on getting the 1265X and joining the forum. Sometimes "OLD" just might be better

That spider coil you were talking about is more than likely a 10.5" coil, I think it will work fine on the 1265x but it is actually a later coil for the 1266x or 1270. I am pretty sure the coils for the 1265x were all solid or some call them box coils. For the type of hunting you do that may be all the coil you need. If you ever run across a elliptical 5x10 you may want to get it, I have one for my 1270 and it will just about replace the need for the 5", or 8".

You are to new to the forum to do PM's but if you was to give shooter your email address and take him up on his offer. Shooter has just about done it all and has a wealth of knowledge. I took him up on the help offer on my first 1270.

One other thing you will love the feel of the 1265x in your hand, it will feel like part of your arm.

Thanks guys. You can email me at historyhunters@comcast.net I'll take any help I can get to get going. As for the coils Ron, did you mean I'm better with the 10.5" Spider or should I look for a box coil? I read that the 5x10 is rare and finding it is tough. I do find it interesting that Fisher went back to the 5x10 for their new F-19. Haven't tried out Fishers at all, but itching to. Would like an F75 possible later unless one comes up with a good deal. Whereabouts in WV are you Ron? I'm from Winchester, VA area.

The 10.5 Spider coil works excellent on the 1265x, The Spider coil is a little easier swinging in the brush then the closed coil. I'll send you the tips page. Also remember you don't have to swing the 1265 fast, slow down and 50% coil overlap is almost a must, Do you have the manual for the 1265X?

Shooter's got you covered on the spider coil, I don't think you would gain a lot with box round coil.

Looks like you are doing you home work, that is the story on the 5x10 coil. The story is pretty much true, but the last couple of years I have had 4 of them. I am bad about letting them go with a detector when I sale one. If you have some problems with getting into the trash you may want to start looking for one.

I am located just outside Huntington WV.

Old Shooter is a book of knowledge on the 1200 series machines and Ron also has quite a bit of knowledge the 1265x is a very good machine and has a extremely fast recovery time and it's deep I always use both disc modes I set disc 1 at 1-1/2 and disc 2 at 3 and I have had great success with these settings. I set my sensitivity just like Shooter does pulled out turn till you get chatter and back it down till it calms down and your ready to hunt.

Shooter - Yes, the seller is including a printed copy of the manual, probably off the internet.

Ron - how much do those 5x10 coils run when they do become available? It's funny that there isn't an abundance of information on this particular machine. Do you know what year they made these and for how long? I'm assuming this unit is from the 80s, but not sure. Surprised Fisher refurbished it for the seller. Is this one of the lifetime warranty units? I read some were back then.

The 5x10 coil seems to be going for about $75.

I had a brand new 1265x but I can't remember the year. Your 1265x did have a life time warranty but First Texas will not honor the old Fisher warranty.

Rons correct they won't honor the warranty, which I think is completely wrong on there part, it still bears the Fisher name. Mine was done over last year, went in for the headphone jack fell apart and the battery cover was broken and the housing was all chipped and cracked, I bought a new housing from Fisher about 6 months before so I asked them if they would replace it for me , they said send it in with the 1265. Also had to send in the 1270 for running erratic and noisy, Well I got the 1270 back pretty quick and still had the same problem so I called Felix and told him about the 1270 and he sent me a call tag to resend the 1270 in so I asked him about the 1265X he said it was just sent to shipping and it was all done and the cost was going to be 95 dollars but being we had the 1270 problem he said it was no charge on 1265. And the 1270 was fixed and back in a flash. My 1265 is like new and still works fantastic. awesome depth. I was thinking about putting up for sale.

I took the F75 LTD and the 1265X for a run yesterday at an older house site. I am struggling to get the settings on the F75 right for me, but it'll come with time I guess. I found lots of info online and tried a couple setups, but never really found anything spectacular. Did manage a button front and another small button with the F75. I was getting a good number in the readout, but jumped everywhere. As for the 1265x, it pulled a bunch of bottle caps from the back yard, couple nails, aluminum flashing shreds. Never got a solid hit that wasn't junk. I am hearing the difference though on the outer edge of the coils with the sounds of the iron. Kind of a fizzy edge, not a solid hot. Is that what I should be hearing? I set discrim around 4 and still heard a lot of signals. Tried running it really high too around 7-8 and that's where I found the bottle caps. The back should have some clad and silver as my buddy found some back there. If I put it on 3 and dig all the signals I'd never finish the yard! So, any other suggestions for me with hearing this? The F75 I like, but it's a whole different ball game from the AT pro. I tried BP mode, discrim 6, sensitivity around 50 and mono as was suggested online, but it too had a lot of iffy signals, not solid and chirpy. Should I dig any of those or just solid hits? Confusing.

What kind of bottle caps the aluminum screw on type or rusty iron type? If your trying to disk out the aluminum ones your going to miss some good targets. If you have the 5" dd coil for the F-75 that's what I'd be using cause that place your hunting sounds mighty trashy and that's where the 5" coil excels.

Another good trash coil for the F75 is the little 6.5" elliptical. Junior is right, it is hard to disc out the aluminum screw caps especially when they are in the ground, it is better to try to work around them. Both the little coils will go pretty deep in the ground if you run in the boost mode or even the CL mode, just remember to slow your swing down when running bp or CL modes.

Attached is some air testing results for each coil in each of the modes (processors). I done this air testing in the house all in one evening, since that time I have done more testing and the numbers come up a little different each time. So I am thinking it is picking up something in the house, so I will just say my numbers are ball park and you may get other numbers. The testing gives me enough confidence in the little coils that I hunt them for silver coins.

Just as I thought I forgot the attachment.

Since I had both detectors last time I didn't switch coils. I'll return there with the 5" and see what I can do. The bottle caps were the old rusty tops, not aluminum. Those I was hitting with the 1265X. Is the small white 5" coil that comes with the F75LTD the DD you are referring to? That is the one I have. I'm going to try to get comfortable with the detector before buying other coils, though I'd love to. I did just purchase a White's TDI as well.. haha. I need an intervention! I love the smaller coil on the AT Pro, so maybe that is the way I should go with the F75. I love the separation those get.

So from that chart, you ran Disc at 65 and got better depth? I thought you lost depth as the Disc was higher? That's interesting to me. I'll definitely test out the 5" coil when I go back there probably later this week. Run it with BP mode and see what we can get.

Your 1265 will loose depth with higher disc settings, your F75 will not loose depth but may gain a little depending on which processor you are running. I am getting a little silver with my 6.5" elliptical, I got a silver quarter Saturday and a silver dime today along with 4 wheat pennies.

Shooter. If you still have those Fisher 1265 tips pages, May I have a copy of them. Thanks Sir. proudreb@msn.com
