First Silver Coin w/705-and the strangest place to find it

I found my first silver coin (with my 705). I was doing some reading on the forum and went out to try a few dfferent settings and to do a little night hunting.
I hit a 1970 penny right in front of my front sidewalk slab. It was down about 4 inches. But I know I have been over this ground as it is right outside my front door.

I walked around a bit, then came back up towards the sidewalk (it runs along the front of the house) and about 8 inches from the sidewalk i hit a 42 reading, dug down only about 2 inches and found a 57 Rosie. Again I KNOW I have been over this area with my Garrets, Whites MXT and my 705.

What a shock, going out trying to find silver and I walked with in inches of this rosie everyday! You never know where it will turn up.

:clapping: Congratulations on the first Lee!

Your story exemplifies exactly why we encourage folks to try different things. I've got my proving ground park that I've hit so hard over the last couple of years, that it's hard to believe that it still gives up anything. But every time that I go there I always find something. Most times it's nothing spectacular, but for as often as I've hunted it, and for all of the setups that I've taken there, there shouldn't be anything left....but I still find something each and every time.

Congrats on your first 705 silver I've learned not to rely on the depth meter it does'nt seem to be accurate over about 3-4 inches.
Nice find on the Rosie.

Congrats.. On your first silver. I agree about your observation about the depth gauge on the 705. I'm told that the gauge is a relative measure of depth and should not be relied on as an exact indicator od depth.

Well said! I have recently experienced what you said about old "hunted out" places. I also began to hunt a park that I have worked for a couple of years but have slowed down my hunting techniques and have scored one silver and 6 wheats.

It is all relative. The depth indicator is based on a coin sized target. But which coin? If it is based on a middle sized coin like a quarter for example, then a dime will read deeper than it really is, and a dollar will read shallower than it is.

That's a perfect example Chuck. Change things up a little, and it is a renewed game.

Just to reinforce my previous post on that park, today my schedule got all screwed up so I had a few hours this afternoon to play. I went to the proving grounds again, with the sole purpose of digging primarily iffy signals on deep targets. I made two passes from where I parked to the back of the park and back to the road. With the exception of one quarter and one nickel, everything that I dug was 6"+.
I pulled 7 quarters (oldest was '65), 6 dimes (oldest was '66), 1 nickel ('64), 15 copper Memorials (ranging from '59 to '78 ), and four Wheats ('51, '45, '44, & '41). ALL came from an area that I've been over several times with several machine/coil combinations. Today I almost ignored the TID altogether, and if it sounded pretty good regardless of what numbers came up it got dug. I did dig some trash, canslaw masquerading as nickels & deep rusty fence staples mostly, but not any more than I normally do.

Again, point being that if you change something your results will show it. It could be good or it could be bad, but just like those iffy signals, you just won't know for sure unless you go for it.

What were your settings and what did you change? What coil also.

Congrats.
I was just doing the simple stup as described by Longhair in this post http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,1761529

I was running stock coil. All I did was Auto noise cancel, ground balanced, then raised sensitivity all the way up. I usually did sensitivity prior to GB.
I went out this afternoon and snagged my second silver a 24 Merc and a 1917 wheatie.

That's getting it done! Way to go Lee!

I just went back to the proving ground yesterday for a couple hours after putting the 3kHz back on. Dug the usual $2-3 in clad and copper mems, no wheats, but did run accross this.

You just have to stay at it.

I'm by far an expert with the 705 yet but I have seen that the TID"s are site specific other words what a silver dime may read in one site might read different in another.
The two seated dimes I found this year the first rang a crisp clean 42 then the second rang a 36 .
But I know there is alot of variables that determine the TID"s so I don't rely on it I just dig it.
