First Spanish Silver In The Family

My brother in law whom is relatively new to detecting had to send his 705 out for repair nearly two weeks ago. He received it back yesterday and was excited because he had just got the ok to detect a new spot that he's been eyeing up.

He has the 5x10 gold pack coil, the 6" HF coil and a 6" digger coil. They live out of state and I called him last night and he asked me how I would go about detecting this location. As much as I'm a huge fan of the digger coil my suggestion was to cover as much ground as he could right out of the gate starting with the 5x10. I said "if it's trashy or you feel you've covered as much ground as you can with the 5x10, swap it out with the digger coil". The last thing he said was "I'll get in touch with you if I do any good".

To back up a little he just started detecting in the spring and has a ton of hours under his belt but I think has only found 2 silvers up till now, maybe 3. A standing liberty quarter and a Barber dime are the two that come to mind. This guy deserves to find way more silver than that with the amount of time he has in but a nice silver has just be illusive to him up until late this afternoon.

I had kind of forgot that he was out detecting but I got a text and an email pretty much at the same time from my sister saying "Whoa, what is this, check out the date!" After a jaw dropping minute and a quick web search it turns out that he found a Spanish Reale. We can't make out how many Reales it is but what a great find. I told him "this is one of those coins that at least the date is visible". He said he didn't have his glasses or magnifier or with him but handed it to my sister to clean up and try to see what the date was. He thought it may have been a seated or standing liberty quarter. My sister cleaned it off with some water and brought it back over to him and said "this can't be right" referring to the date. That's when they texted me.

I know he checks out the forum from time to time but doesn't post so I figured I would post this for him.

As a family we've just been having an excellent year. I found my first 1877 Indian this year and my only 4 V nickels. Hotrod53 found a silver half one week, 3 silver halfs the following week, and an 1889 Morgan dollar the week after. Our Mom found an 1865 2 cent piece and an Indian in the same hole and then a month or so later a 1745 King George. Now our brother in law with a 1779 Reale.

Go Minelab!!!!

sweeeeet, that's a very cool find.

The one in my avatar is a 2 reale. it's just a lil smaller then a half dollar.

Definitely looks like the coin has some miles on it. It's interesting to think that coins like those made their way over here on Spanish galleons. I lived on the Gold Coast of Florida for a brief period of time and I remember them finding these in shipwrecks. One can only imagine how a coin like that made it's way so far inland back in those days. We take for granted all the forms of transportation that we have these days along with better living conditions.

He said he can't make out the denomination but its about the size of a half dollar. Not sure if that helps us figure out the Reale number or not.

When I found mine I did some research on them and found out that the reale's was a commonly used coin in the US in the 1700 and early 1800's. They were minted in Spain, Mexico and in south America. Mine was minted in Mexico. The old saying, "Pieces of 8 " I do not know the whole saying but they use to cut the reale's up in to 8 pie shape pieces and use them for change.

That is a great find! Congrats to him ! Sounds like you and your family are having a awesome season! Congrats!

Nice Congrats to him. I found my 1st Real about 1 month ago that is in very similar condition. The date is clearly visible 1777. but I was able to ID it as a Half Real with the *R* on the backside. The R is the only detail on the back. I was very surprised to dig it, as it was reading like a Memorial Penny on my Safari. I dug it because it was showing as a deep target. Glad he could score a Real, you don't find them everyday, it may be a once in a lifetime find. The Half Real I found is the size of a dime, if his is bigger then a dime then he has a larger denomination Real
